I always wondered that. I mean at first I'd assume you'd throw a rag on ya to keep ya a lil warm or whatever depending on the temperature.. but yeah, what the fuck happened?

Hmm, I guess bible-thumpers would be certain about the where and why of clothing becoming mandatory... however, there is no sure answer to the when part in that sort of reasoning :D

All kidding aside, taboos are a powerful thing and as soon as someone in (what we call) a primitive culture became a shaman, priest, etc. and proclaimed that showing the nude body was enraging their god/great spirit/head honcho/whatchamaycallit the days of nude paradise were over. Of course, there are still spiritual beliefs that the nude body itself is sacred.

Strong taboo amplifiers were the first christian colonizers visiting native tribal cultures and imposing their "indecency" views on them. For that part, we have an answer to the "when" question, as that started in the late 15th century.

Wiggling naked toes, yearning to live in a nude paradise,

I'm pretty sure most of our laws against it came from the victorian era when everything was bad, even sex and masturbation (hence why circumcision became popular - it reduced pleasure so it was thought it would reduce masterbation)

Youd think since we're supposed to be more enlightened and civilized now we could get beyond all that victorian age nonsense and just let everyone go naked or wear clothes or do whatever they want and just disreguard whatever those Victorians set up because we'll theyre dead and besides the most elite uber bible thumpers today nobodys really gonna make a big stink about it. I mean why cling to some old outdated customs when we can just make our own more modern enlightened customs now.

I envision that it probably started out as a way to keep warm in a harsh environment.
Because of that, clothing and the ability to obtain clothing and the idea of being able to keep oneself warm was eventually seen as testament to a person's ability to survive and protect themselves.....ideal characteristics when you are looking for a mate.
I guess overtime, clothing started out very necessary for survival reasons, and maybe with widespread use was eventually necessary just to garner the attention of the opposite sex.

"Mandatory" in the sense of protecting from the elements, or "mandatory" in the sense of conforming to morality standards?

I would imagine that protective clothing became mandatory as soon as man realized that without it he would die or become sick from exposure.

As for morality standards, that would vary greatly from culture to culture. In the traditional Western and Westernized world, the concept of modesty has been hammered home as soon as Judeo-Christian morality became dominant...

It is only the dam prudes and narrow minded do gooders who think clothing should be mandatory as they all see nudists, naturists as sex offenders etc because they are all ignorant and narrow minded what a pity such people exist .I have always believed in live and let live ,so let people dress or not as the case maybe they are not harming any one else ,the naked body is the most natural thing in the world. All men have the same all woman have the same ,we all just come in different sizes and in some cases colours ,but really once you have seen one you have seen them all .What is the big deal?

Agreed! Dogs have no shame in having sex in the open. They have no shame in humping each other or sniffing each other's private areas in the open. Why do humans have so much shame about nudity?
