Does anyone know if this is going to be a problem? It was a damn chewed up piece that my cat dug out of the garbage. I saw it but just a few seconds shy before it was to late. I know in people it takes a long time for it to digest, so I am concerned. Any thoughts on this much appreciated. I won't get anywhere calling the vet and the minute I walk in it is about 65 bucks.

It should be fine. I had a dog once that ate socks and other large things that past through him fine.:D

If it got down okay - of course it will be fine.

Things that are hard to digest just come out before they are finished digesting.

Actually the cat is not that great. Has not eaten anything since swallowing the gum yesterday and is very lathargic. I am taking pepper to the vet later today. Will keep you all posted.

No one even considered what kinda gum it was yet, including myself.

What kind was it? (Be specific, if it was whitening, or sugar-free, etc. etc.)

And just because it hasn't eaten yet doesn't mean it is not okay - it could just be giving it an upset stomach.
You seem a little high-strung to me, but it's great that you're concerned about your pet - and if you have the money go for it!

If you want your gum, I would wait until it comes out before trying to chew it.

I am not actually high strung at all. Nor is it a laughing matter. I am sad many of you are finding this funny, I am new here and would not have posted if I thought I would be laughed at. For those who do care the gum has caused an intestinal blockage and Pepper is not well. The vet has done some tests and x rays and sadly the gum happens to be one of the worst things a cat could swallow. Not sure what to do now as any of you who have animals know illnesses with pets can get very costly and she is a very old cat. She is being monitored over night and we will hope for the best.

Well looks like a post was deleted so thank you whoever did that. I also wanted to say thank you to those of you who have taken the time to reply nicely. Here is Pepper who I have just heard is resting well. Our hope is the blockage breaks up through the night.

Well so much for thinking this was not going to be a big deal. The vet has informed us that Pepper has been vomiting all through the night and has been in a hunch back position. The blockage is a severe one and she requires surgery :( She was going under about an hour ago so we should here back soon. Although she is an old cat and probably nearing the end of her life we just couldn't not get her the surgery. Someone asked what type of gum it was, unfortunately it was a huge wad of bubblicious bubble gum  The vet said had it been a small piece if trident or whatever the blockage no doubt would not have happened. We are so mad this has happened, poor Pepper and our poor wallet.

Oh Precious-I am so sorry about Pepper-poor soul

I still have my fingers crossed that all will be fine. Just using up one of her 9 lives-I'm sure she has many in reserve.

    Please keep us posted
    GO PEPPER

Pepper is doing well. Vet said the blockage was a bad one and no doubt would have killed her without the surgery. She needs to be monitored for a few days and will come home on Saturday. I am off to have a look at her before work, although she will no doubt be passed out.

That is so great. I really hope it all works out and she gets better. She looks like the opposite of my cat, mine, Harley, is more white with black. :)

cats need surgery for eating gum?! what a pussy. (no pun intended)

one of my dogs ate broken glass, so I fed him bread and 2 cotton balls, and he's fine

I showed this thread to my vet who was over having coffee before she went to work and she is concerned that you may have been ripped off. To reassure that you weren't ripped off, ask to see the x-ray. Even a layman will be able to read it because the cat should have been given a barium swallow- this is a contrast medium that will show up white on the x-ray and show the blockage and where it is. If he won't show you the x-ray, then that speaks for itself. What else are they hiding???
