The only work I've read by DeSade is Philosophy in the Boudoir. I thought it was really good, with the philosophy pretty well though out, though I can't say I agree with the ideals proposed in it. Regardless I'd recommend it to others. And the sex scenes were pretty fabulous too.
I read some of his stuff years ago when I was in college. I found it distasteful and pointless. I saw no value in it at all.
I agree. Like most erotica writers, he talks around the subject of sex. I liked his fictional writings on the polygamous, tribe of the Butua, who eat their young girlfriends raw a bit.
