Hey hip ones, I just recently was diagnosed with adult ADHD, which certainly explains a lot about my personality and some of my more, um, "quirky" tendencies. I'm going to go about coping without medications, and the counselor who consulted with me agreed that education about how an ADD/ADHD brain works and utilizing practical coping strategies and organization techniques will be the best way for me to deal with this.

Luckily because I'm "documented" now I can have a longer time to take tests (going back to school in the fall) and similar accommodations in my academic pursuits which will be way helpful. I'm looking for good, solid, based-in-science reading material. Anyone who is an adult dealing with this found a decent book on the subject?

The reason I ask is that I've been researching books, and a lot of the reviews I'm getting are saying, "if your problems go beyond being late to business meetings, this book isn't for you," or, "if you don't like the victim mentality, this book isn't for you," or, "if you don't believe in finding your 'special center' this book isn't for you." I couldn't seem to find a book that rational/thinking people liked. I don't want someone to tell me to find my spirit, to meditate, to do some reiki, or to tell me that fish oil is going to fix it. Omega 3's are good for brain function but they aren't a cure for a behavioral disorder.

I don't want to waste my time reading fluff about list-making and breaking tasks down, as well as structuring your life more. I already know that (it's just motivating myself to stick to such routines after finding one that works for me). What I need to learn is how an ADHD person's brain WORKS, so I can figure out the why's of my behavior. I feel like once I know the why's, I can figure out the how's, of how to deal with it more effectively. Everything I've found online seems to be just pushing the list making tip, and I think most people, even non ADD people, find lists helpful to stay organized...it's just a little frustrating. I can't really afford long-term therapy at this point so I'd like to just learn about this on my own and find coping strategies that way.

Any really good, solid, scientific, practical, and possibly hippie-friendly ADD/ADHD books for adults? Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)
