I'm just curious here, if someone starts the dread process using wax, do they continue to use it the whole time they have dreadlocks??? :S I've never used wax and don't really have anyone in person to ask, so I'm just wondering. BTW, this whole thing started cause some lady came into the store I work at with long/thick dreads (looked fairly mature to me) and they looked all waxy, so I just wondered if they ever stop waxing.... :S And I don't really want a pro-wax vs anti-wax argument starting lol. I'm just curious if anyone here used wax for that long of a time or know someone who has.
From my understanding people who wax do so in the beginning phases only. However, the wax stays in the hair and so I wouldnt be surprised if they look waxy when they mature and stuff.
I started with wax. My dreads were 8 months old when I found this site and I can't remember if I was still using the wax when I joined or not. I know I used it heavily in the first 3 months though then I got fed up of waxing and I "got lazy" with wax using it like every 3 months or so. I bleached my hair and it all came out after that one bleach. Because I found it so easy to get rid of the wax, I find it hard to believe that wax is so hard to get out for some people. My dreads have been completely wax free for a long time contrary to what Mandy says.
BrotherMat started with wax. His didn't turn out to badly... not sure how long he used it for.. maybe 2 months?
Could just be me, but I think commercial "dread wax" is going to be a lot more of a problem than bees wax, if you use organic bees wax the worst I can see happening is it being a bitch to dissolve/melt/whatever out once you're dreaded up. I can see wax being used to start dreads without being so harmful.. though it would look like shit anyway. But I would personally want it out after starting them. *while the above may appear to be an endorsement of wax, I'm neglecting right now.... so if you doubt my dreading discipline, fuck you *
i know a girl who's had dreads for a couple of years and still waxes fairly regularly. like once a month or so. actually just remembered another guy the same. had dreads for years and still waxes ferociously.
Ah, okay. So it basically comes down to individuals choice of waxing. Even if I had used wax I would have gotten way lazy about it. I can't believe people wax dreads for soooooo long! fickle- do their dreads look/feel weird? i've always wondered what waxy dreads feel like.... Haha besides being wax covered hair lol. thanks for the responses
i had wax dreads once, and i cut after 9 months... now i have natural/neglect dreads and i'm going on 2 years. natural dreads feel better to the touch. right, it is personal choice... but here is the deal with wax>>> truth: WAX stays in your hair and is pretty hard to get out without chemical damage or scalding water attracts dirt and sticks dirt and moisture in your hair, which smells grody makes the hair not really "lock" so much as stick together with wax the texture of wax dreads is hard and stiff,, while natural dreads are soft and wiggly wax heads are often badly informed and don't wash their hair as often as they should PS-i've never seen anyone with wax dreads make it past a year, or even a few months... people on this forum say otherwise, but i think they possibly purged the wax at some point.
I was confused about this as well because i know a halfrican guy that lives down my old street and he had his dreads for over 5 years, they looked really good. I asked him one day which method he used and he said he started with wax, and has been getting it rewaxed over the years as often as he felt necessary. (every couple months) I like his dreads but i don't think i could ever have dreadlocks if i had to carry myself to a salon every other month to get them waxed.
in my experience, the people that wax their hair are usually the ones that see it as being 'cool' or 'trendy' or something and end up cutting/combing before long (usually combing since their hair isn't actually 'locked')
wax is used because people want to speed up the dreading process by forcing the hairs to "knot better" (stick together) using a cum like substence which is fuckin retarted . if you want to use wax, for some reason, so start your dreads and make you think they are forming better then they would without it, go for it. but personnaly i say dont use wax, its just for people who are to worried about what other people will think and dont want the full experience of real, tight ass fuckin gnarly REAL dreads .
