I've had my dreads now for a year and it's been swell. And I hope to continue having dreads for a long while... but you know waht.>. I really wish I had tried doing natural/neglect dreads. Most of my hair was backcombed a good portion was T&R but a few were just left on their own... and they are by far my fav. The one just sucked in all the loose hair and has made hte cutest most adorable dread ever. I cant' imagine brushing out all of the progress I have made... but at the same time, I keep thinking how much I would love to watch the neglect process. AHHHHHH!! Not even sure why I posted... more just sharing my thoughts. Anyone else ever feel like this? Ahhhh!
Sorta xD But I guess, for me, its enough knowing I want to try it, and I've already gotten this far with bcing... so whats the point
I'm not sure you're missing a lot. It's like being looked at like you walked into the room with a siberian tiger on a leash. A very long leash. Every time.
it's crazy i know but I felt the same way! When I do dreads again I am going neglect. I loved my dreads but I felt like they looked unnatural in some ways, like at parts where I fought the natural sections. Combing out is tedious. It took me probably 40 hours to do them all. I didn't cute them at all, and when I took them out my hair was like mid-back when they had been just below my shoulders before. When my hair gets to my lower back I am going to stop brushing and see what happens.....
I feel like some time in the distant future my hair will be all lovely and dreaded up and nice, and I will comb then out to start over because so far it has been really nice to see the progress they make like week to week, all loopie and changing and crazy. I remember NP saying that he liked growing dreadlocks and not just having dreadlocks and I agree with that
I feel the same way. Sometimes I want to comb out and go neglect just to see the differences. But at the same time I want to comb out and do the braid method too. I think if I do comb and re do them I'd go with the braid method, though.
If you never cut them, you can like growing them for a lifetime You don't have to start over to watch your dreads grow. In fact that's pretty impatient of you, for someone with such a long term hair style
What I'm saying is year 0-1 is far more interesting then year 5-6 would be, and I'm sure in the long run I'd want to start over to witness it again.
I don't mind my hair looking like I rolled out of bed ten minutes ago, but I'd be stoked if I had 6 year old dreads, and you can bet your sweet ass I wouldn't be wanting to comb them out so I could go back to my fresh out of bed look.
neglect is great! seriously hair is just hair. if you wanna comb out and go neglect, then i would say go for it!
Wow! We'ze divided! I'm really happy I'm not the only crazy one that thinks about it. The one natural one I have just loops up so perfectly and is so pretty... it's like... it's the way dreads are supposed to look. And to be honest, I bet it would still take the exact same length of time for all my hair to lock up. On my neglect dread there are very few wispies left... it's almost totally locked. On my backcombed hair, some of the dreads are half straight still... that's gonna take awhile to lock. Hmmm.. hm... hmmm...
Yeah my neglect ones are completely awesome, some of them are crazy and loopy but most in the back are awesome and locking up nicely, whereas the backcombed ones are.....meh. They are knotting only a few inches down, some of them I have like ten inches of just loose hair. (it makes it so one side of my hair is wayyy longer than the other ) I think it is because the backcombed ones take time to undo and redo themselves while neglect ones just go to knotting.
so i dont seem to find any neglect heads chiming in about how they like to comb out and then back comb.... i wonder why that is... i went neglect and i'd never backcomb, its like taking the easy way out. and it seems backcombers realize they took the insta-dread easy way and would now like to go and try it the natural way.
I defiantly see the pros of backcombing when it comes to sections and size control and all that, I almost wish that I'd gone back and paid more attention because I ended up with some that eat everything in sight and become monsters. I loves them though. Edit...I'm posting way too much in this thread, I should be doing laundry.
