Im not a vegetarian but I totally understand what you mean. Not eating meat is a personal choice you made for yourself, that's it. People asking those kinds of questions are just ignorant and stupid.

Unless, of course, they actually have a thousand dollars.
Rich people get bored, they find weird ways of entertaining themselves.
Watching vegans squirm might just fit in that category.

I'm always getting "So, do you eat fish?" Um, what part of VEGETARIAN don't you understand? Of course, it doesn't help that a lot of people out there are calling themselves vegetarian whilst eating fish. That's PESCATARIAN people! I actually knew a girl once who ate chicken and fish and called herself a vegetarian.

I don't care what you eat, that's your choice, but when you use the wrong term for it, you make it harder on others who actually ARE vegetarian. I don't know how many times I've ordered something in a restaurant after being assured it's vegetarian, only to find out it was made with chicken broth or fish paste or whatever. Yes, broth and stock count. Yes, it matters. Meat would make me sick after all this time!

To be fair, vegetarians also use a wrong name. If you are vegetarian you also eat something that's not a vegetable. Some labels need more time to get known (and used). We just have to be patients.

Vegetarian originates from vegetas, full of life, not vegetables.

Here are my fun rebuttals. Guess which questions:
    chicken doesn't come from eggplant.
    Fish don't come from seaweed.
You eat meat? Where do you get your fibre???!!??

Actually, that's not true. The term "vegetarian" doesn't come from "vegetas" (it should be "vegetus") but from the verb "vegetare" -> "vegetabile" or from "vegetale". I don't know how to translate the meaning fo this terms from italian (and so latin) to english, the second is "atto a vegetare" and the third is "di ciò che vegeta": both of them are only connected to plants.
So, considering the etymon, "vegetarian" *is* the wrong name. The same is for "pescetarian" since a clam is not a fish. :p
Labels are conventional and they just have to give an idea.

Either way, who gives a fuck?

I think it's stupid when people ask if I eat fish as well.
I'm like... this isn't a Nirvana song, bitch, fish have feelings.

It was my second week at my new job and my whole team went out to lunch at Maggiano's (Italian) this stupid bitch (fat too I might add) was complaining that she didn't want to order "family style" because she wanted her own meal (more like she wanted 5 meals). Anyway, she looked right at me while we were deciding what to order family style and she said, "well, all you can eat is salad, right?" I swear to god if I weren't at work I would have punched this dingbat in the face (I still have issues with her to this day... I'm not the only one). Then they ordered a salad with prosciutto on it. Duh, wtf?

For me the most annoying thing people say is about the protien, or if I catch a cold (which come from GERMS) they tell me it is because I'm vegetarian (which could be likely since thier disgusting meat is full of antibiotics that our bodies most certainly do not need)... ugghh I digress. I get plenty of protien, and I get sick because sick people come to work and cough on all the paperwork. The end.

I hear that. I really don't like when people have to comment on or talk condescending about my lifestyle. I keep it to myself, why can't people just leave me and my choices alone?

honestly, I think it is defensive.
When I mention my lifestyle choice, meat eaters often chime in with, "well, I don't eat that much meat."
(great, I don't want to hear about it)
Then there are the attackers. They question, mockingly, all the usual suspects: protein, iron, what do you eat, do you get sick (yes, I'm allergic to cats- I live with a cat lover), then the who are you to tell me how to eat? comments start. (exactly who is telling whom how to eat, here?)
It is tiring. But it is all them. Let it go. Because they won't stop and if we get upset it hurts only us. (read the Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz on this, or any good text on Zen/attachment)

I sometimes pick up on a person who would love to get closer to how I eat.
Those folks will get clues (oh, I love this site called XYZ, or this cookbook) or the lunch destination will be more veg friendly. I've given away all my entry-level books (without collector value) to friends wanting to cut back on meat or other animal products.
