Hello, Well I just started to get my hair dreaded and I also do competitive swimming and was wondering if anyone knew how long I have to wait before I get back in the pool. The method im using is twisting and backcombing. Right now they are all just twisted.
wow, vague post is vague. How long is 'just started'?, are you using anything on them? I'm sure people will disagree with me, but in my opinion dreadlocks would be a very bad idea for competitive swimming, they cause alot of drag in the water depending on length etc, they withhold lots of water and therefore get very heavy when wet...also depending on length etc. Also if your swimming in a chlorine pool I've found it a real pain to get rid of all the chlorine, this is where I assume people will say how often they swim an how chlorine isn't a problem, but in my experience pool water makes my hair feel nasty and the chlorine is a serious bind to shift. The dreadlocks are going to come loose regardless of whether you go swimming today or in 6 months, if you don't touch them, i.e don't keep trying to fix them up everytime they come loose they'll tighten by themselves. Otherwise I would say it's going to be quite a long time yet before they start to mature to the point where swimming doesn't affect them.
give us more info and, if possible, some pictures. then we could help. oh yeah check out the FAQ http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=364273&f=209
well all i did was backcombed it first and than started to twist it...I have had the twist in for about 1 month now other than that i dont do anything to them just retwist every once in a while
Lol hes from the Dominican Republic man english isnt a first language no need to talk about vauge posts. Pretty much what bubbletonic said though I dont think it would be a good idea but who knows im assuming your Afro-Latino? If your doing the twist method im not sure how it would affect because your hairs much coarser maybe ask dreadlocksftw or someone who has similar textured hair
Chill man, I didn't knock his English, which is infact very good, my point was merely there wasn't much infomation regarding the hair...
Didnt say you knocked his english im just saying how can you expect his post not to be vauge and lack information when its hard for him to convert what he means into english
You think wrong then man what I said was implied fine how do you expect someone to explain in detail exactly what they mean when they dont speak a langauge as much as you much less type it Si quieres hablar en espanol Domincano yo entiendo o si quieres hace un pm y yo te respondo cuando tengo tiempo. No ay mucha gente que hablan espanol aqui ,pero yo ya le dije que no se con tu pelo por que yo no tengo el pelo africano pero yo puedo traducir para resolver tu problema
Your hair holding the weight of the water is going to be your biggest problem, depnding on how long your hair is it may be a year or two before it becomes a serious problem but it will eventually cause hassle
Um just to clarify this I speak english 100% born in DR but raised in the Bronx english major at penn state so thats all I got to say bout that...y Yo sé hablar español con fluidez...well you are right when i grow my hair its grows into an afro but when i swim i swim with a cap on so it keeps most of the water out....but my question is how long would it take and what should i do to dread my hair??? and how do u post pics lol??? I tried dragging but it doesnt work
I have no experience with twisted dreads, so I have no idea how that method effects how long it will take, but in general it takes months before they really start to lock and become dreads. Hair type has a lot to do with it and yours should lock faster than mine. I had what was more "sectioned locks of hair" up until about 6 months after I stopped combing. I'm a fan of the letting the hair tangle on it's own and ripping big matted pieces into sections (natural/neglect/patience). Pos that clears it up it just thought you spoke mainly spanish but if the swimming cap blocks the hair then i assume you just keep re-twisting every few weeks until they start taking form and then little by little stop twisting as often until they feel like their well intact they got videos on youtube on how to re-twist ive come across them before
