I've always wanted to write my autobiography, but I'm still so young and it never turns out interesting or the way I want it to. I'm taking a n online psychology class right now and we're required as a final project to write a "developmental biography". I decided for lack of subjects to write it on myself. Now as I write it in APA format, I realize this IS my autobiography... it flows perfectly for me and its actually interesting. Anyone else here ever written their autobiograhy?
Oh, four days late, but who cares? Yeah, kind of. If you count a memoir-type thing in the 3rd grade. Other than that, not really. I don't have anything interesting to write about. You must have an interesting life if you're writing your autobiography at 21. Whenever I hear the word 'autobiography', I always think of celebrities, Jim Morrison, and old(ish) people. Good luck on your writing!
I'll write my autobiography one day before I expire. Otherwise it won't be complete. This is a big ego thing, and somehow I believe there aren't thousands and thousands out there who can be bothered about my personal drama one way or the other.
I did mine back in 1982 when I turned 38, and even acknowledged it was a mid life crisis type thing. I need to update it, but in the meantime since then I have a body of other writings that would serve as an autobiography. Do you have any progeny? Do it for your childrens' childrens' children. IDK, I may research if the Smithsonian is interested in such writings. We don't think much of the historical importance of things going on NOW, but just think if your great grandparents had written something about life in the early 20th century (My great grandparents were in the 19th century). I pressured my mom & dad to write about their early life (The Great Depression - WWII).
The words we type here online will serve as a better indication of who we are now, to people in the future then any autobiography we may try to write at any one (or two or three) points in our lives.
Be careful when writing this type of stuff. People who write about themselves have a tendency to make the central character (you lol) very inactive. Essentially, it can get boring. Make sure you view what you've done as opposed to what has happened to you. Because we sort of view ourselves in that light: "This happened to me, that happened to me..." Ya know what I mean? You ever read A Child Called It? Oh my god, that shit was horrible. The dude basically recounted how his mother tortured him for all these years. Brutal stuff. It was just terribly boring, though.
In college, one of my assignments was to write an exerpt from my autobiography if that makes sense. It was weird because I was only 18 at thte time but I feel like if I went back and read what I wrote now not only would I be able to read about myself as a kid (pretty much what I wrote about) but I would also indirectly learn about myself at 18 when I wrote it. Even though you are young and kind of feel like not much has happened to write about, you can always hold on to that piece you wrote and add it to whatever you write later on in life. Maybe in 15 years you'll have a completely different take on the same information and descriptions.
Really? I read that book and got really into it. Yeah, it was basically a retelling of one abusive incident after another but I wouldnt say it was boring. I did have to put it down for a little bit and come back to it because I was horrified by some of the things that happen. I think this just goes to show that for whatever we choose to write there are some people who will like it and some who wont. I like your idea of incorporating what a person has done as opposed to just what has been done to them, because in the end a weak main character makes for a boring book. OK....now I am rethinking what I said about the book in the first place. LOL
@ Crazy Dreamer lol Nah I understand that book touched a lot of people, especially those who lived in abusive households. But shit, as far as an entertaining read goes...I dunno. And not to sound harsh, but the dude who wrote that book mentions how badly his mom beat the crap out of him in EVERY OTHER piece he writes. Me and my boy were researching a book idea of ours, and to do so we scooped up a bunch of self-help books. Well the "Child Called It" guy wrote one of them. Every other goddamn paragraph was like, "...and being true to yourself works wonders for self-esteem, as I learned while I was chained up in the basement after my mom beat me with a stick." lol Sorry, dude just annoys me...
