Sarcasm is usually detected by tone of voice and facial expressions. I guess you didn't detect mine either.

Well, sorry. There are a lot of people on here who would say that in all seriousness. What Grim said was obviously a joke.

cigarettes alone don't cause the cancer or other diseases, the monoxide from vehicles, the preservatives, saturated fats, the radiation etc play a big part also. i don't see as much money spent to educate people on how to keep healthy from this high tech industrial environment we live in instead.

yea and smoking actually keeps people stay slim in many cases.
tobacco may be bad but it is not completely evil
it helps the joint to burn smoother. for centuries people in the jungle have smoked unprocessed tobacco and have long lives without trips to chemo.
i just don't like the pretentious campaigns and its not the root of problem.:p

You're just dead wrong. Cigarettes alone do cause, not only cancer, but heart disease and many other lung problems. As far as education on how to keep healthy, you're just not paying attention; the information is everywhere.

People are going to believe only what they want to believe.

Yes, information is out there-- along with an abundance of misinformation that inflates the egos of the misinformed at the peril of their health.

Just a little anecdote, my grandmother died of a form of lung cancer the doctors insisted was caused by smoking or at least second-hand smoke even though she never smoked, her mother and father did not smoke nor did my grandfather or anyone else in the household. She was however, a huge herbal remedy /vitamin supplement/alternative health person. She made whole grain bread from home-ground wheat and all those "Granola" type foods ever since I remember from my earliest childhood.

There are plenty of other things in the air that will fuck you up, for instance
Rednecks around here are constantly idling their giant diesel trucks (turnin' 'um off's bad for the starter and other BS) If you ride a bike you will eventually have to stop next to one of these smoke belching pieces of shit at an intersection...

But no, Cigarettes are what the problem is Damnit!

What happened to the idea that industrial air pollution or ground water pollution is causing disease? People and doctors all seem conditioned to blame a smokers health on their smoking habit primarily. It's fucking bullshit.
If you smoke, you must be unhealthy...

I'll tell you something else, last round of flu virus most non-smokers I know, who also take herbs and over-the-counter remedy's, suffered up to a week longer than myself.
Some of these "uber-healthy" folks even had to go to the doctor and get "antibiotics"...Fucking weak.
I never take herbals, vitamin supps, or over-the counter remedies.

When someone tells me smoking is bad for me I say "Duh"...then I light a cig and challenge them to a bet, 50$ I can beat them in a foot race around the block...never had a taker! :p

Lotta shit bad for your health in this world, including getting hit by a bus, if you get my meaning.

    lovers of tobacco
Smoke 'em while you can, The health Nazis are coming...

My father died of smoking-related causes at age 59. His father quit smoking in his 50s and made it to age 86, and he was still enjoying his life up until the last few months. So STFU.

    Sorry about your health Jack...:(
Didn't you say you had been an electronics tech for many years?
Are you not counting all the fumes from years of soldering?

I was a welder for many years, and installed a lot of fireproof acoustic ceiling tile as well...
My health improved greatly when I got out of construction.
Did you know that the lawyer who sued the asbestos industry has for years been trying to bring a case against Gypsum drywall?

The solder I used is much different than what you used and my irons were a much lower temperature (only a minute amount of smoke). I did check this out a few years ago and couldn't find any real research on it, except that it was not likely a problem, which is what 3 doctors have also told me so far. And, it was suggested that the rosin was a bigger concern, but still not much either. The solder would be a heavy metal and cause a completely different set of problems if it was in enough of a quantity.

I'm a research junkie, particularly in the area of Psychology and Medical studies. Here are three to give you an idea of the specific problems that occur as a result of specific substances. (from WikiPedia, but accepted science)

Mesothelioma, more precisely malignant mesothelioma, is a rare form of cancer that develops from the protective lining that covers many of the body's internal organs, the mesothelium. It is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.

COPD is caused by noxious particles or gas, most commonly from tobacco smoking, which triggers an abnormal inflammatory response in the lung.

Black lung disease, also known as Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), is caused by long exposure to coal dust. It is a common affliction of coal miners and others who work with coal,

Over 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette, many of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia are all present in cigarette smoke. Forty-three known carcinogens are in mainstream smoke, sidestream smoke, or both. (not from wikipedia)

This is not a government plot to take your cigarettes. It has been, however, an industry plot to hide the medical problems that smoking causes. In the 90s suit against the tobacco companies, many of the executives admitted under oath that they have known for decades that their product kills people.

Haven't heard anything about "Gypsum drywall," except some bad stuff from China.

Well I do my share of research...http://healthandenergy.com/deadly_diesel_fumes.htm

    Deadly Diesel Fumes

The deadly effects of breathing diesel fumes came into sharp focus this week when the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) released a report[1] estimating that diesel fumes kill about 21,000 U.S. citizens each year.
Furthermore, diesel fumes cause 27,000 nonfatal heart attacks and 410,000 asthma attacks in U.S. adults each year, plus roughly 12,000 cases of chronic bronchitis, 15,000 hospital admissions, 2.4 million lost-work days, and 14 million restricted activity days.
And that is almost certainly not the worst of it. The Clean Air Task Force report cites numerous studies revealing that diesel soot:

    • Degrades the immune system (the system that protects us all from bacteria, viruses and cancers);
    • Interferes with our hormones, reducing sperm production, masculinizing female rats, altering the development of baby rats (changing their bones, thymus, and nervous systems), modifying their adrenal and reproductive hormones;
    • Causes serious, permanent impairment of the nervous system in diesel-exposed railroad workers;
    • Induces allergic reactions, not limited to asthma, causing children to miss thousands upon thousands of school-days a primary cause of school dropout, consequent low self-esteem, and subsequent life- failure.
The new report is based on the most recent available data from the federal EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) combined with EPA risk models, with calculations carried out by Abt Associates, a consulting firm that frequently performs contract studies for the EPA.[2]
The key findings of the report should come as no surprise. The dangers of breathing diesel fumes have been known for at least two decades.

    Looks good to me.

Bio-diesel smells like french fries. Many of the small towns over in Alabama have converted to Bio-diesel and collect old cooking oil from their residents and businesses.

We starting to change our evil ways, sloooowwwwly.

I fiiiinally quit smoking 2 months ago after a pack and a half a day for 15 years.

That being said, they will always be legal because of the profits made from them. There is no resolution unless there is a profit to be made from it.

The honest information, it's hard to show direct causation between smoking and disease, but there is a hell of a lot of information to show a strong correlation. Having said that, a variety of other factors can affect a person's health, ultimately we will all die. There is no point feeling guilty, and the superiority trip some people play is bullshit.

But there is no point kidding yourself, the shit isn't good, you want to be young for your whole life or you want to get old real fucking quick? What I'm saying, is there is no point replacing the guilt bullshit for pretending smoking is ok for you bullshit.

If you wanna smoke, go smoke, but it won't hurt you to be honest with yourself. You're 14, you are still growing, this is possibly the worst possible time you could be smoking because you're going through significant physical growth and change and smoking makes your body have to work even harder.

I believe you when you say you're not hooked, but one smokes to relax right? it is relaxing indeed... so what happens if the shit really hits the fan? what happens when the chips are down and you don't know how to pick them up? if you're anything like me you will probably get hooked on smoking to. I was 14 when i started, a pack between friends each month just at parties, everyone of us is addicted to smoking now days. I'm not saying you are us, but it is something to think about.

And don't think you're sticking it to anyone by smoking despite societies warning, because that's the big fucking joke. You're paying dickheads, who do not give a shit about you, lots of fucking money for a plant you would be able to grow, if the government, who taxes the tobacco would let you. Meanwhile, assuming you end up being a productive member of society, you will contribute you whole life and when you're ready to pick up your super, bam you die, now who's laughing?

I'm not saying you will die at 65, but statistically, smokers over all will die younger and the economic impact is quite real.

To everyone who thinks they're better than smokers, we are not a category, we are just people not unlike yourselves :D . I'm not hurting anyone by smoking so unless you're telling me it is bad for me out of compassion, fuck off and die ;)
