Dreadie ladies on here - how many dreads do you have and how thick are they? my dreads are about 7 mos old now, and very tight. I've recently realized that the ones in the back somehow came out alot fatter than the ones on top, about twice as thick, even though the sections were made similar in size, which I'm not too happy about. My hair is not terribly thick anyway so I only have about 38 pencil to pinky sized dreads from one and a half inch sections (with some dreads being index finger to thumb sized in the back) on my head. My hubby thinks that they are too fat and that thinner dreads are more feminine, also he likes the thinner ones because they are more flexible and the fatter ones are hard and stiff (HAHAHA) so not as fun to play with. I tried separating some of the ones in the nape area as those were the fattest ones, to avoid undoing all the knotting they've done so far, but fuck they were HARD to rip, even though they are short, it HURT. plus the sections are kinda turning out weird shaped since I'm splitting already made ones - long skinny rectangular which i heard was bad. Should I just comb out the back and start over, rather than split them? I hate to have to totally restart the back after all this time, but it almost seems like it would be easier than ripping them.

^^^ HERE you can see some of the bigger ones in the back before I ripped them.

Just goes to show how much the hubs knows then. He's about as anti hippie as it gets, he's a corporate bitch if i ever saw one and we are in some ways as different as night & day. Last time I take his advice about dreads hahaha.

thats my previous set and the ones on top and front didnt ever get as big as the back ones but your hair on the front and top of your head is different from the back in the way of theres less hair up front than in the back

yeah its weird, its thinner for sure. the ones right on the hairline are the skinniest of all, they are like pencil thin - even though the sections are the same size as the back lol. fun watching how they do their own thing.

Fat dreads are the best, I'd rather have chunky beasts than try and be feminine with skinny dreads. Plus in my opinion the bigger they are the more fun they are to play with:)p)
I think you should leave your dreads how they are, they look pretty uniform to me anyway.

I've got somewhere between 28 and 30 dreads, i've been letting a few Congo but don't really qualify as one dread yet. Mine are pretty average in thickness in my view at least, I've got some that are two thumbs thick and some that are pinky thick (because the most accurate way to measure is comparison to fingers)

My hair sounds exactly like yours. Mine go from skinny skinny to big and fat. I like the variety. =)

hah mine are all thick on the top part of my head and the back ones are the skinnier ones. I like the fat ones better anyways. the skinny ones are usually really thin and then bulbous at the tip which just pisses me off. :)

eh, i only have a few so i'll take the hit for my backcombing start lol. Other than that I haven't seen any "unwanted" side-effects so it's okay.

i'll suck it up. they might grow on me... or thicken up :D

I have bout 30 well I did, as 7 dreads have congoed(not altogether as one they have turned into 3) so obviously less than that now,so I have some real thin ones and some really fat ones.

haha, i figured putting seriously in quotations was a way of saying that.

since i've already done it and it doesn't actually bother me too much (the little clumpy ends are only on like 5 dreads) i'm okay with it. i actually really like my hair :) backcombing worked well in my opinion, and for my first set of dreadlocks its totally fine :D

I tried counting but got annoyed with it....Im guessing I have around 30-40? Your dreads look beautiful OP! Leave em be. Once they gain length...you'll want thicker ones cuz they will be easier to manage and funner to play with....and in my opinion thick dreads on women are far more beautiful and natural looking than skinny ones.

Not a girl but my dreads started with 42 :p I remember of course because thats the meaning of life ;)

Now I have 50 (just counted there, might have missed a few). About 5 of the new ones are only a few inches long and formed themselves after splitting from neighbouring dreads. I lost one dread at a party (bonfire) and another two are congoing.

Dont worry about how many you have, or whether theyre too thick or too skinny, your hair is going to do what it wants anyway so unless ones hanging on by a hair or you have 10 of them congoing its probably best just to leave em be :) sectioning wont really help control them anyway.
