So, I'm the only "Old Hippie" who helped out the newer generation understand our time? The questions weren't that difficult, nor was it unpleasant answering them. Here's my e-mail conversation from Feb 2nd.

    1. You mentioned leaving the police force. What sparked the idea to leave the police force? And did you work any other jobs in the early 70's?

I was in the USAF for 4 years and gravitated to New Orleans. The easiest job for a young man out of the service was as a security guard and after a couple years of that I got on the Harbor Police Dept. However, even in the Air Force my attitudes were changing and I was becoming less regimented. You have to know the racism in the South at that time. The only other cop on the force that I was friends with was Charles, a black man. I was told we shouldn't be friends. Also, I guess I was exploring the youth culture of the time and started wearing bell-bottom pants, sandals, mod style thick leather watchbands and letting my hair get a little too long for the cops. A lieutenant told me I needed a haircut. So, it was time to move on, especially after my friend Charles had already left.

My work history after that was sporadic. I had been taking a computer course (before PC or desktops) and worked a few weeks at a bank computer room. Actually went to work tripping on acid one night. That was shortly before I quit. New Orleans was the Big Easy. You could live cheaply there. I worked at a gas station for a while, then got on at the French Market Corporation one of the only places that hired guys with long hair. Also got a job for a while at the New Orleans Museum of Art as a security guard and laborer who helped put up displays.

    2. Did media in the 60's and 70's promote "Free Love"?

The media was constrained by artificial propriety then just as it is today, but the creative types tried to push the limits. Rowan and Martin's Laugh In was the most popular show in 68 and they did all the stereotypes of the time. Imagine a young Goldie Hawn doing go-go dancing in a Bikini with flowers painted on her bod. The Smothers Brothers got canned by CBS because they pushed too many limits. Actually, I was young and didn't watch too much TV in those days, too busy doing free luv.

    3. After your first experiments with drugs how often would you engage in sexual activities under the influences of marijuana or lsd?

Only once on acid. I wrote about it in my sex history:

"Psychedelics, like grass, also heighten sensual perception, but usually the distortions are too intense and distracting to concentrate on a single activity like fucking, at least not until coming down from the peak experience. There was one time however, while tripping together at my apartment, Murielle and I got undressed and started playing around on the bed. The effect of the psychedelic intensified every touch and caress to unreal proportions, where they became sensual waves echoing throughout our bodies and into the room. When my penis slid into her vagina, every nerve amplified its response so that we could feel each cell of our membranes as they made contact with the other's flesh. At the time I had an irritation at the opening of my penis, and with each downward stroke the pain of the irritation which was also intensified by the psychedelic felt like the slit in my penis was being ripped apart. The pain was not distracting but merged into the whole sensual symphony and actually became a stimulating side note. As the waves of sexual stimulation grew in intensity, we began to get lost as body, and soon there was just heightening rhythm and surges; electrical impulses that flashed through us and covered our skin in changing colors, until finally in deafening silence there was a flash of white light which strobed in increments of declining duration until we were lying there, aware only of the rhythm of our heavy breathing and the droplets of sweat trailing down our wet skin."

However, grass was another matter. I actually got tired of the paranoia I got with grass, and cut back on smoking. But the only time I could enjoy smoking was when Lorily and I were living together. We would smoke and fuck. The grass was a great enhancer to that. All thru the late '60s and early '70s smoking grass would often end up with having sex - mainly because the girls liked fucking stoned or getting stoned before fucking.

    4. Was engaging in homosexual sex considered natural among the hippie community?

Pretty much so, but I don't know if there was a "Hippie Community" that was universal. I remember after my first sex with men in New Orleans, when I officially considered myself bisexual, some long-hair friends from the coffee shop queried me about it. They seemed a little astonished, but made no value judgments or seemed to openly disapprove. We were throwing out all the old propriety by doing free heterosexual love and interracial love, so homosexuality was accepted as just another way to make love. Also, you would find it hard to have a mixed gender orgy without bumping skin with guys and girls.

    5. Where would most of your sexual activity take place?

I have had sex with sisters in their commune with others present, but most of the time it was at my apartment. Usually the gay guys that I had sex with was in their apartments around town. Have done it outside in the woods and on the levee. When I lived in the commune at the HEAD clinic, we had large rooms divided into cubicles and I had sex there, just behind curtains from others. Privacy wasn't such a requirement.

    6. Was "Free Love" considered offensive for people not experiencing it?

Yes, at least of my mother's generation. Well, actually my father was a bit of an outlaw and accepted it. He did all the wild things I was doing - only he didn't do it in the road. In 1970 while a girl and I were traveling from the Atlanta Pop Festival to San Francisco we were going to stop by my mom's for a night. My mom was so hostile to the fact that I was traveling with a Hippie girl that we didn't stay and just continued driving, sleeping in the bug (not comfortable even when you are young). A couple years later, I came thru with Lorily, the woman I had lived with for half a year in New Orleans and my mom was more accepting, tho she made us sleep in different rooms. Lorily was a more straight, respectable looking woman and I was taking her to a university for her Masters. When we stopped by my dad's place he and his wife made up a double bed for us. My dad had lived with his 3rd wife (who was about my age) before they got married.

Hope this answers your questions. Write back if you need more info.
