I have recently relized how perfectly Taoism makes sense, I am very new to it, and just had a couple questions How can one be a taoist and continiue going to school or work, they seem so trivial. Does a true Taoist have political views? I consider abortion horrible, but could a taoist say whether things are wrong or not? And I've read that Taoism can coexist with other religions, I am currently a Christian and feel Taoism contradicts everything Christianity stands for, so how could they coexist?
tao is all of that. you, asking these questions. work. school. a dead foetus. there is nothing that isn't tao.
Things go wrong in the taoist sense when they become unbalanced. When we deviate too far from the natural order of things. Hence you could see the casual use of abortion as negative and still have a taoist view. If you're a christian then you have to believe in a personal god and the sacrificial death of jesus etc. From the perspective of tao this is all very over-constructed. Taoism for instance doesn't say that human nature is basically bad or flawed as does c/anity. There's no doubt though that most people are out of balance with both the universe and their own inner self. So perhaps you could see c/anity as a way of re-balancing. Theoretically at least. In practice it doesn't actually seem to work on that level. Taoism can co-exist with other beliefs, but the question is can c/anity?
Taoism is perhaps the most simple philosophy in all of history. It's base message is to allow things to be the way they are and learn to accept while at the same time knowing and practicing the values of peace, harmony with yourself, others, and nature, and the hope that by your actions someone else may eventually become attuned to the way of Tao. Remember as Lao Tzu said "The Journy of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
I would suggest reflecting on the teachings of Christ in the light of what you have learnt in Taoist meditation. You might discover a whole new vision of Christianity than is taught in the churches today.
When I 'discovered' Taoism, my life changed. Of course you can have political veiws, it's how you voice them that counts. Keep everything in balance. I am an athiest, and although I know people who follow the path of the Tao and claim to have religious beliefs, for me the two just don't mix. But whatever brings you peace and happiness
A major part of being Taoist is self-cultivation. How can you make decisions in your life without knowledge to base your decisions on. Longevity is also a part of Taoist practice, without maintaining your health life will be short. Who are you to decide what is right for another person we all must make our own choices. Please explain what contradictions you are referring to between Christianity and Taoism.
