SAN FRANCISCO (March 25) -- California voters will decide in November whether to legalize personal use of marijuana and impose a tax that could raise more than $1 billion for financially struggling state and local governments.

California Secretary of State Debra Bowen announced Wednesday that an initiative known as the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010 has qualified for the ballot. Sponsors of the measure submitted 694,248 signatures, far more than the 433,971 they needed to win a place on the Nov. 2 ballot.

The initiative would allow anyone 21 or older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana and cultivate plants in an area up to 25 square feet. It also would allow local governments to regulate and tax the cultivation, distribution and sale of marijuana in their jurisdictions...

A Field Poll conducted last year found that 56 percent of Californians supported the idea of legalizing and taxing marijuana.

    An ounce?

That seems a bit much to me... We're allowed 3grams in Belgium, and it's nowhere as strict as in the US on drug related things.

What are we at now? I think it was some 60% for the ballot. I'm in Canada trying to keep myself updated. I will definetly be coming to California this year if the result is FOR the legalization of marijuana in California.

This is a dream come true for me, and I hope Canada is next!!!! BC kush is fucking unbeleiveable!! mmm mmmm.

Looks like the Beverly Hillbillies were a few decades ahead of their time. We're all gonna be loadin' up the truck and headin' west.

    Thank you the Scribe

    for posting this.

Hopefully one day the federalgovernment will follow in the footsteps of California should this be passed in Nov.

It was disheartening to see on the news, back in September 2002, that the local police officers had to stand aside while the feds came in and busted cancer patients for using grass to rid them of their nausea and be able to eat. The good news was that soon thereafter, in Santa Cruz, at city hall they dispensed the medical marijuana:

It is sad that this is still a "debate" at all, at this late of 2010. But mercifully, it may pass in November 2010.

Bet the Feds are sweatin' it. I have a farmer friend that's been agitating the legislature in Cal to let him grow hemp to make bio diesel and they won't even consider that. You'd have to smoke several acres of hemp to get high and they're still scared of it. Goofy bastards.

california is already over populated... come.. spend your money having a good time with the legal weed here.. go back home and get legalization laws passed where you live. it's not gonna be worth moving here.. everyone else has that idea too.

Well I've been thinking about cali for a while. And this just seems like another reason that it's the right place for me.

It's not just "legal weed, wooord! Ima go to cali and get fucked up son"

It will make a nice jumping off point to the rest of the world, and a nice place to come home to in the end.

but such a large portion of the people in jail are there for possession... will the authorities freak out and go on a weed arrest rampage to control the vote? i'm not sure what to expect.

the jails are over crowed as they are, thats probably why they decided to put this on the bill for November. they keep arresting and processing people in cali, in a state where overwhelmingly the majority smokes. WHICH is a loss of money to cali, and the people. Atleast this would help generate some much needed cash flow.

Hemp could make a whole new world economy, but lets face it. That will never happen (sadly)
