It's against the dress code for some strange reason, and I've been yelled at a couple times. How could I get around it?
Or just wear long jeans that hang over the fronts of your feet so nobody knows youre barefoot. They might see your toes but just think youve got flip flops on.
Hi Sunflower, for me it worked just to try again and again. Finally those narrow minded ones did resignate and i had my freedom ;-) But this is scores of years ago, and we didn't have an explicit (written) dresscode. So i "only" had to overcome some teachers' bigotry. Probably it helped that, beside my basic leraning output, i was active in school self adminidtration, school newspaper and some other projects. If you go to a public school, maybe you could claim that banning barefooters is an act of severe discrimination. If you go to a private school, probably you have no chance for a legal solution, as they are free to set the rules (but probably they would rather have a barefoot, but paying klient than none). If you don't like to struggle for your natural right to go barefoot, i think the flipflop version is a good compromise. Just put them off as often as possible, "forget" them somewhere etc, and maybe you can overcome the restrictions this way in a friendly way. Little strokes fell big oaks ;-) Good luck!
I go to college barefoot. In the beginning, people in my class felt very uncomfortable with it. By now, they ask me why I have my shoes on if I have (which is near to never). At the campus they do know me, but sometimes I get yelled at too, I guess it's something you have to take with you...Or rather ignore those people, most of the time they don't know what they're talking about. But make sure you have some very good reasons for walking barefoot, so you can defend yourself in a discussion. Here you can find a lot: http://www.barefooters.org/ Hope it helps you...
One possible way to get teachers etc. to see that being bareefoot is natural and healthy, is to provide them with positive examples - in other places, barefoot kids at school are praised as being role models: http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/3525160/Barefoot-Regan-whizzes-past-the-competition/ (Link courtesy of the SBL mailing list). Ewww, you get germs on your feet or something? lol, Yeah I get that too. They're excuse is that you can contract diseases and germs through your feet, but if that fails they blame it on sharp objects. Apparently they're not aware of how conscious bare footers are when they walk. Either way persistence is the key, barefoot season is starting for me so I hope they can deal with it, if not I guess I'm going to get expelled for not wearing shoes, hahaha.... that would be a first
Another example to quote is a high school in Chamisa Mesa, New Mexico (link courtesy of SBL mailing list). Their dress code is: no dress code, and shoes are not to be worn in carpeted areas - for colder months, they suggest bringing indoor slippers (not require, just suggest). As the member pointing that out notes, there are many barefooters around in that school: http://www.chamisamesa.net/parents/Policies & Procedures.html Wiggling toes, ~*Ganesha*~
