So I'm new to Yoga! and I just want some advice from all you experienced yoga hippies out there! I'd like alot of stretching, maybe working on my flexibility.....I really like the idea of somewhat beginning in a tree pose. I like a challenge. I want something I can do every morning at 5am. Something zen, that eventually gets harder, Ive seen some pretty intricate yoga poses and at some point i'd really love to do them. I'm not sure if there is a already a forum for this I looked around so hopefully no flaming! Peace and Love! I've ruled out Kundalini
Interesting why you have ruled out kundalini? Perhaps an explanation is needed. Kundalini is seen as a latent energy residing in our root chakra (at base of spine) symbolised as a coiled serpent. 'Yoga' is designed to remove the energy bocks in our body allowing this energy to rise up through the chakras out into the universe. A kind of energising practice. The uinon between the earth and the sky or Shiva and shakti (body and mind). Kundalini yogis (they often wear white turbans) is a sacred style that concentrates on this energy. Most forms of yoga work with this energy. Some references refer to Kundalini yoga as sexual yoga. Yoga practiced in order to achieve good sex can also be called tantra yoga. Again tantra just means 'technique' so its use has been hijacked for erotic motives. There is nothing more sensual that a yoga class and some call this energy 'sexual energy'. This comes from calling this energy 'life-force energy'. Balances allow one to join mind, body and spirit where working in one sheath effects all other sheaths. To do the tree you need to coordinate your spine which is like a loose bag of bones by spinal alignment. Muscle coordination is important and confidence in the mind that you can do it. There are preparations to allow one to learn the tree in stages. Enjoy your path and the jouny is more fun than getting there. Love and light (Dru yoga teacher)
i would say try some vinyasa flows and then maybe work a little bit in balance poses. i dabble around (Iyengar, Bikram, Vinyasa, Yin, etc) and i really enjoy the freedom and options that it gives me.
A good place to start is often Hatha yoga. It can be gentle for a beginner and you can continue to add to your own personal stretches and breathing as you progress. The sun salutation is a great way to start the day, a few classes and you will have enough beginner moves to do so. May you find the path you are seeking
When I first started yoga, I found some really good websites and DVD's to start off with. When I was more confident, I started going along to a Hindu centre where I did classes. I chose the Hindu centre, because there was a teacher was a yogi and had dedicated his life to it, so i felt a good connection with him and I learnt a lot. From personal experience, I would say try a lot of styles and eventually you will find the right one that really does something for you.
