Anyone read his stuff (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife etc)? I read Northern lights when I was younger and fell in love with it.
i read all of the golden compass series. i dont usually like fantasy, but i thought these books were great!
I've read the three books mentioned and one other of his (something to do with a well if I remember correctly) and while I found the three in his series enthralling (though I hated the ending...not happy enough) I didn't like his other book that I read. It was okay...but nothing as spectacular as the Subtle Knife.
But I like happy!! I mean! Boy meets girl, boy lives in alternate dimension, boy leaves girl...it just isn't good enough!! =D
I Love his dark materials trilogy!! And i agree the end made me cry lol!!but i spose if they manged to stay together it prob just wouldn't be the same. never mind!!! i really like his other series aswell, the ruby in the smoke etc. however i am scared about the film of northen lights that they are making, i hope they don't ruien it, like so many other books have.
I happened to hear Pullman being interviewed on Radio 4 a few years ago and went out and bought Northern Lights out of curiosity. I literally finished it in 24 hours, went out and got The Subtle Knife and read that in another 24 hours, then had an agonising wait for the third volume to come out in hardback (it's very rarely that I buy books in hardback). I'm ambivalent about the planned movie as I can't see how they can keep the anti-religious sentiment without being blacklisted by every multiplex in the US of A. and yeah, I agree that "happy" isn't everything - the scenario of boy and girl being stranded in alternative dimensions is so powerful they even ripped it off for Dr Who.
The Golden Compass was slow at first. If the movie weren't coming out, I wouldn't have finished it. I know my daughter who loved the book will want to see the movie. The book got better but near the end the explanation of what was going on seriously pissed me off. I won't be reading the rest of the series.
Haha, yes indeed.. if one were cynical one could theorise that Phillip Pullman played on the "pets that can talk" fantasy that many children have to sell books.. but then I'm not cynical and LOVED the series. The Ruby in the Smoke et al were good, but not a patch on His Dark Materials. And a movie of Northern Lights? Could go either way. Could be a great adaption of the work (like the LOTR films, in my opinion anyway) or it could be a load of bollocks (like the Harry Potter films). The anti-religious stance? Well, The Da Vinci Code did pretty well in cinemas...
Brilliant, one of the first books I read that challenged stuff, I remember sitting in church one day, and the line "the Christian religion is a very powerful and convincing lie..." popped into my head...thus it began haha.
Since the film is coming out, i've been told by several people that I have to read the books first. Now i'm not usually into fantasy all that much, but i've got to say, so far i'm really enjoying Northern Lights. Are the other books in the series as good?
i had a book that was all the whole trilogy in one binding. just finished it and its like my favorite story ever! i feel empty now that Ive finished it lol.
On man, I know just what you mean. I feel that way when I finish great stories or series too. This one wasn't that way for me. In fact, I only read the first one which made me quite angry and that was it.
I loved them! I read them when I was 12 and since then I have read them many more times...I agree with weetone...it definitely inspired me to question what I believed. I find something new everytime I read them
