Well, even if he found a reason to live, he'd still have to die eventually - so the second seems counter-productive.

But I'm just busting your balls for giving such a stereotypical fortune cookie answer.

You actually feel motivated by the posters, don't you?

Did you even read his post? All he's doing is searching. There's far too much searching already.

He has his answer just by the fact that he is alive and has no reason to die - what's he need to search for?

He may not have rationalized it yet, maybe he did once and forgot, but he already has a reason, else he'd be dead.

To tell the truth, I just want to get to the point where the misery is so overwhelming that I'm more afraid of living than dying... because dying is actually pretty scary, but living is really shitty when you think about it.

Sometimes I think it will actually be exciting to see what happens... like if your consciousness changes or if you just slowly lose your senses or if you actually just realize you're dead or if it's nothing at all.

Well, it all sorta depends how you die...

    Why's living shitty?

And what the hell are you comparing it to?

If your not tough enough to live then get on with it and stop feeling sorry for yourself.
As long as this thread is,it seems, you'll die of old age reading and answering post of everyone begging you not to kill yourself.
    death is a personal experience,ya can't take a babbysitter.
These folks are to involved with living to nurse you into the next realm.
no one on this side knows what will happen to you,but even if it is a bad thing, hey ya won't be bored.
Life is an experience, if your tough and brave enough to live.

"I've never saw a wild thing feel sorry for itself,
a bird will fall frozen dead, from a bough
never having felt sorry for itself".

There are things that exist in life that suggest there is probably more to the universe than you can get to while you're alive... and these things are important and exciting and terrifying and worthwhile. I know that they exist, but having a body to maintain and occupy locks you into a series of patterns that basically exist to keep you focused on transient, meaningless shit.

You know like when you go traveling to another country and you run into someone you know without expecting it, or when you start traveling up a mountain, and ditch your bicycle without knowing how you're going to get home, and then you meet someone who gives you a new bicycle. I've seen enough in this life to know/believe that there are forces at work behind the scenes-- and that they are conscious and clearest to you when you can have faith and escape your comforts-- all those routines buried in routines that cause misery after misery, while offering slight reprieves so that you don't feel like you have enough of a reason to die... or burdening you down with 'responsibilities' to things that you create, however never really connect with or find meaning in.

Life is shitty because most people don't even know what's important and ultimately hit a point where they just stop thinking about it and dismiss anything that isn't tangibly contributing to their immediate survival as childish and superfluous... and communicating and dealing with those people is frustrating and boring, and doing what they say in a job situation is in all likelihood much, much, much worse than death... 80 percent of the world is genuinely soulless, and these people twist and contort your spirit until you're actually ashamed of having something to say, or useless because you're more interested in saying something important than saying something trivial-- but these are the people who get ahead.

Mainstream people do very, very, very well in this life... BECAUSE they don't think, and because they just get on with it without wondering if it's something they should be doing... they just do it because it's what they're supposed to do, and because it's what other people are doing. AND THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO SUCCEED IN THIS LIFE.

Shittiness is an epidemic, currently achieving omnipotence in everyone's hearts and minds... we are a race divorced from the world around us. The sky is getting shittier, the air is getting shittier, food is getting shittier, people are definitely getting shittier... there's so much talking and yelling and arguing going on everywhere that I can't take it.

I hate cities with their crime, their noise and their dehumanization. I fucking hate all cars and trucks. I hate suburbs with their materialistic neighbors who compete for lack of anything better to do, because they have no culture and they're too busy to make their own. I hate country towns with their backwards rednecks who love being stupid and standing up for things they don't even understand.

I could go on and on and on and on like this... there's no one thing that's making me say all of this.

Things in life are shit at times. You need to get out there and change things for yourself and make them the way you want it. Complaining about things won't help and will only make you more miserable with it all.

haha that was kind of a fortune cookie answer, huh? I did read his post and although he is searching, he needs to find something. Clearly something is keeping him here, so maybe he just needs to pinpoint what it is? I am just saying, why would he have SEARCH for a reason to kill himself? Couldn't he invest more time in the opposite? Death is so...final.

I think he has already found everything there is to find, the ability to think for himself and clearly see all the questions that have no answers.

Like most of the rest of us,only he seems to take it all too seriously. I suppose it doesn't matter whether he goes or stays--it's a shame that a guy so obviously intelligent can't find something worth living for.

I think his post was a complete, lightweight copout.

"The only difference seems to be that they're content with things that really don't matter"

That's another way of saying they have found something that matters to them, and you are too lazy to bother.

"get a job I'm really not so excited about because I couldn't think of anything I wanted to do more."

Aim for something bigger then, maybe you will never make it happen but you say yourself your life has no meaning so what will it matter if you waste it failing.

"I'm thinking I should sacrifice myself to save an animal from being hit by a car or something like that"

Martyr complex is a tricky one, I bet helping out on phone lines is too small for you and will bore you to tears. Pick something bigger you don't like and try and change it. Like you say, there's plenty of people around not so much different to you. Come up with the idea, or find some from here and you won't have to fly solo.

"and I don't consider saving yet another human life to be doing ANY good for the world whatsoever-- they are already far, far, far too many people in the world-- which is probably a big part of the problem."

Depends on the person, but that's not as big and clever as turning on your own species because you're stuck in a rut.

"There are so many people in the world that it's actually impossible for the majority of us to live lives that have even the vaguest semblance of meaning..."

To most people meaning is that shoes they have been coveting for a month or that sweet ass ride they've wanted since last years auto magazine. If you're ready to chuck in the towel almost anyway, why not really roll the dice, pick something which WOULD have meaning even if it's way out of your league, work backwards from where you want to go and give it a try. Maybe you can do it, maybe you're selling yourself short.

The only problem you seem to have is either choosing something with meaning or being willing to give something with meaning a go which is way out of your league (so you think, and it probably is, but people have to try, someone will succeed).

"for the majority of us to live lives" you said in reference to meaning. so some people CAN live lives that have meaning? are you coveting someone elses position, perhaps? maybe you just covet something they HAVE. you should get it all a bit clearer first. i can give you a reason to kill yourself if you want and a surefire and not unpleasant way to do it, thing is though i don't think you earned it yet ;)

Ha ha ha ha... are you saying that most people really feel they have meaningful lives? I'd say they're happy because they're too busy or too distracted or too stupid to really think about it.

I would answer the rest of your post, but it would take forever and probably still not satisfy anyone. Anyway, I suppose the fact that I keep responding here is probably a good clue that I'm not going to do it... as long as I have this thread and people who are willing to argue that living is worthwhile, I guess that it's possible that life has meaning and I'm just not getting it... probably not, but it's possible... but maybe that's the problem-- there's always room for doubt.

Leave enough room for doubt-- act normal in the middle of the living room and you might just be able to convince someone to accept that their house isn't on fire. Act like life is meaningful and worthwhile, and some depressed asshole like me will start wondering if you know (or feel) something I don't.

as meaningful as they need them to be, most people don't care a lot. they decide it's all about reproduction and money and that's the end of their soul searching in my experience...

You're not going to find it. Nor, are you going to find a reason to live. Hey, baby! You're 33 like me! :D

Edit: I like living because I'm alive. When I'm dead, I'll like death because I'm dead.

The only thing keeping anybody here is the instinct to survive at all costs. Just because his natural instincts are in working order doesn't mean he has a higher purpose here.

We all make our own purpose in life.

    1) Intense pain is of but short duration; chronic pain is moderate and easy to bear...It is our fixed opinions about pain that makes us suffer;

    2) Happiness is not some grandiose project outside our control, but that which is easy and accessible to procure. It is seeking happiness in things outside our natural means which makes us suffer;

    3) Death means nothing to us, because when we're alive we do not know death. When we're dead we will not know being alive. It is the anticipation of death which makes us suffer.
