When we are very young we try to 'fit in' and be the same as everyone else in order to be accepted and feel normal.

When we are a little older we try to be different because we realize that trying to be the same as everybody else is unnatural and boring, and it makes us feel like a 'robot'.

When we get a little older we realize that by trying to be different we end up being the SAME because everyone tries to be different by coming to the same realization that trying to be the same is 'not cool' and "I need to be different."

Then we hit a point where were like FUCK it, ill just be me.... and I think that, thats a very important component process of maturation.

In a pool of offspring only a certain percentage survive to maturity.

I wonder if everyone has to go through this process to be a true individual.

Surely, I know many adults that are still on the first stage - but I wonder if anyone has this ...security? by default.

I believe we all do need this process, because that's how we learn.
Just like we need to take a step to walk forward.

Here is one perspective by G. I. Gurdjieff.
"Man lives his life in sleep, and in sleep he dies." As a result of this condition each person perceives things from a completely subjective perspective. Gurdjieff stated that maleficent events such as wars and so on could not possibly take place if people were more awake. He asserted that people in their typical state function as unconscious automatons, but that one can "wake up" and become a different sort of human being altogether.

    That is sooo true.
Sad things most people never outgrow trying to be different or the same.

I like the idea, but it doesn't sound realistic - it seems to me that clarity only comes in moments.

We dream in our sleep and find it quite reasonable that we do so. We dream when we are awake but we call our waking dream a hope and do not realize the the effect is the same. How much time do we spend attending to things and how much is considering potential outcomes. We can only be occupied by one thought at a time. We spend our time dodging nightmares.

Some people don't go through the "fitting in" stage because they can't do it. This can be a blessing and a curse.

Eh, I can never fit into mainstream culture - it just doesn't work. But that doesn't mean I couldn't find other small groups of friends to conform to when I was younger.
I'm sure everyone could find somewhere to fit into, even if it isn't real or living people.

I think I just got the process all wrong, but by saying that it just sounds like I am just trying to be different - when in my older age I am trying to actually fit in

    This is all so confusing.

End of the day, I am just awkward.

I don't understand where your confusion stems from, can you please explain?

....You can try to fit in BY trying to be different... if everyone is trying to be different and you are trying to be like everyone... does that clarify?

And the hipsters are the ones stuck in stage 2.

It's really not that serious of a subject, if you any of the first 2 things past puberty you're an idiot.
