for anyone who can understand Finnish i will strongly recommend "tuntematon sotilas" by väinö linna (the name translates as "the unknown soldier" in english).

it's a war novel about the Finland - Russia war around 1944.

it's a great book, just finished reading it last night, such a masterpiece

and ok, if you are Finnish you probably will have read the book already. if you are not Finnish you can probably find a translation of it. the story is told from a strictly Finnish point of view though so you kind of need to know a bit of Finnish history if you want to know the background information about the book

but definetly one of the best books ever.

and john lennon's biography is great too.

ahhh, gotta still finish reading that double biography of stalin & hitler.....

Ohh you're Finnish..?? Awesome, nice to see other Finns here. :) Mä oon kans Suomesta, mut asun nyt Englannissa opiskelujen takia. Anyhoo... I was forced to read Tuntematon Sotilas in high school and didn't really like it much. But then again... I've never been a fan of Finnish literature. I do agree that it's a masterpiece; it describes the history really accurately and vividly.

mä ku taas räkätin koko kirjan läpi!!
taisit jo arvat textist et oon turkulaine.
asuin iteki englannis (sheffield) mut vuos sitte tuli muutettuu italiaa.

but yeah i think it's a great book the way Finnish language is used is just hilarious

"halloo. sanohan onko siellä ryssän helevetissä kylymä?"

"ja Mannerheim sanoo et nyt sitä lähtään.....silmien väliin ryssiä tähtään"

yesterday i started readin "the name of the rose" in Finnish, i really would have preferred to read it in English or Italian though but couldn't find the other translations (we got all 3 languages at home).

I have to admit I haven't read this. I don't often go in for non-fiction or history. However, my ex was a massive history nut, and as a result I wound up reading Napoleon's Russian Campaign by Philippe De Segur. Have you ever read that? It is amazing and completely heartbreaking.

it isn't exactly fiction because it is so closely based on the history of Finland.

it's largely reality based so it's only kind of half-fiction

ahh right now i'm reading "the name of the rose" and it's amazing!
