LONDON – Readers in the United States probably haven’t even heard of mephedrone (not to be confused with methadone, a medical substitute for heroin), but the legal high is hogging the limelight here in Great Britain – and not for the right reasons. The drug has been linked to the deaths of at least 25 people in the U.K., according to the Home Office’s Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs. Mephedrone, which costs as little as $10 a gram, has become the fourth most popular street drug in the U.K. The white powered substance, which is usually snorted through the nose, came out of nowhere late last year has rapidly become Britain’s new party drug of choice, replacing highs such as ecstasy and cocaine. Its effects are said to be similar to a combination of the two but in this case it’s legal, cheaper and easier to buy – making it a favorite among young people. Peace
Not going to be legal for long though Tearing through Ireland too, a lot of my stupid friends are going through mutiple grams each week not thinking of the consequences or safety of it just because its legal
i think it is really irresponsible to make that legal.....wth??? how can something like that be legal, and not weed. it dosnt make sense. i think some ppl made a bad decicion there...
this year (basically since last reading festival) i have done a LOT of mephedrone. really, really irresponsible especially considering how little i knew about it and i generally consider myself to be fairly responsible around these things (or at the very least as clued up as i can be) i guess the leaving-school hedonsim mentality got the best of me. ive had a couple of mates taking a ride in an ambulance because of it, a bad case of dehydration and some seratonin sickness. personally, i stopped taking it because i had a nasty case of depression (there was a lot of other stuff which contributed to this, but i'm sure messing my seratonin levels about as often as i did didn't help) the high is like a combination of coke and mdma, but a line of this will only last you around forty minutes. its not addictive, but it is VERY moreish (the difference is important to understanding how dangerous it can be) the really interesting and attractive thing about it (asides from price and legality) is that, take less than a gram or two and you get no comedown (unlike mdma) however, take more than this and you will get a comedown. a very bad one. this may be because unlike coke, which affects dopamine or mdma, which affects seratonin, drone affects both. so in small ammounts, you wont register the loss of one in particular, taking only a little of each rather than a lot of both. take a lot of it. and your body will give you a kick in the teeth you won't regret. (NB: this conclusion is based on personal experience and the experience of others rather than any scientific knowledge, its not fact, its just a conclusion that we've come to) the worst thing is the moreishness. if youve got a gram or two, that'll be more than enough and you ll get through it, topping yourself up very regularly until you run out. but take enough and you'll reach a stage where it no longer has an affect on you. this is really worrying, it implies that your seratonin or dopamine can no longer be stimulated for some reason. its a warning sign you do well to take heed of. anyhoo, MDMA is safer and better, we know more about it. you take it once, have a great night. you dont keep on taking it till you run out or chase blue lights. however, having said that, i find the medias reaction to mephedrone to be fairly irresponsible. for example i read a story the other day about a girl who "died on mephedrone" only on the second page of the article did it mention that shed actually taken the drug 4 weeks before her death. still close enough for her death to be "linked to Mephedrone". don't get me wrong, it should be banned, but journalists have a responsibility to the truth, rather than deliberate fear mongering and exaggeration.
Not to be a naysayer because it sounds like there are some significant risks and regulation might be smart, but... We've seen similiar headlines for salvia, robotussin, whipped cream... Just sayin' I'm surprised by the unanimous responses in support of legislation in this thread and no discussion of the choice to do with your body as you like.
i have a lot of friends who use this stuff, they love it. personally i think its retarded. kind of interesting that the dad thinks it attributed to his son's suicide, though. this sounds a lot like the case in delaware concerning salvia and the one suicide which lead to its illegalization in that state.
I don't know much about mephedrone. But from my understanding most of the deaths have been attributed to mixing drugs. So someone has taken mephedrone then drunk loads of alcohol or also taken some other street drug with it. *shrugs* People should just use this thing called common sense, and not mix drugs. But alas, the world isn't perfect. I remember the similar scare over ecstacy because people were under the impression that if they drank loads of water they could negate the effects of the drug. So, some people ended up dying, not because of the drug itself; but because they caused their brain to swell from drinking too much water. Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about sythetic chemicals anymore. I've done a few (and i mean very few) in my lifetime; but overall, I find the most fullfilling and happiest drug experiences have always been using things that are derived naturally from plants: mushrooms, salvia divinorum, cannabis. If drugs weren't illegal, then there would be more research done, and people would be more informed before taking substances so the chances of something going wrong would be less likely. As more drugs, such as mephedrone, are outlawed the less people will know, and what will happen is people will only rely on information that they can find online and on mate's experiences. And everyone should know how reliable that information can be. There's too many "drugs" outlawed already. I still can't wrap my head around how they managed to outlaw mushrooms, when they grow wild in places! Then there was Spice, which was a nice alternative to cannabis. Especially when the cannabis going around was laced with fibreglass resin. However, that too was made illegal a few months back. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. Nearly every animal and insect turns to things in the wild to make themselves high, why is it that we as human beings are meant to completely obstain from getting a buzz now and then. Unless of course it is a buzz that is giving money to the alcohol distributors. *sigh*
Mephodrone is okay. Tastes like shit, burns your nose and is basically like MDMA but not as good. I wouldn't exactly call it 'new' either. It's been around for a couple of years. I've had some fun times on it.
There was a diet pill that you could get at the drop of a hat back in the 70s and 80s I dunno the real name of the stuff, we called them 'Black beauties' got ya high as a kite, so they banned em, "Reason given" " Well we can't have people walking around feeling good all the time" Yea thats what they said... Peace
There's evidentally a new one on the way to replace Mephedrone. Something called NRG? It's going to be easier to overdose on it, and in general cause more problems. Everytime they outlaw something, someone creates something new to replace it, and the cycle seems to just keep on going.
It's not "particularly" dangerous, but to me feels like Ecstasy's retarded brother, I steer well clear of that crap
