I sectioned and backcombed my hair a week ago and it has, of course, fallen out since as I am complete crap at doing any kind of hair-related stuff. I decided that since there's not much hope for me doing a better job of backcombing, I would just let it knot itself up naturally from there.

And there are actually a few sections that I made that have stayed together more or less. They don't look anything like they did the first day, but they are at least separate from the rest of my hair - with loose roots and loose ends and a knot forming somewhere in the middle. I'm not worried about those bits.

The rest of my hair, however, has formed a massive conglomeration of tangled knot. My head feels like a giant poofy cotton ball. I've tried pulling what feels like sections apart, but it's really all just me sectioning my hair all over again - the hair itself seems like it wants to be one giant uni-dread. :( Plus I've got fairly fine hair to begin with, so I don't want to pull too much of it out trying to tame the puff ball.

Should I keep messing with it or just leave it alone and hope it kinda sections itself?

It is normal for backcombed sections to fall out, its just how it works. As for your puff ball, I say let it knot up and rip apart sections once they feel like they are fairly knotted.
I'm not sure they makes sense really, what I mean is instead of separating the tangles, let it knot quite a bit and every once in a while have a good go at ripping them apart.

Oh no, that makes perfect sense. That's actually pretty much what I had in mind but I just kept wondering if it was even possible for the hair to section itself, seeing as it is all wound up into one piece. Just letting it go sounds lovely. For me, the best thing about getting dreads was not having to mess with my hair every day, anyway.

    Thanks!

i would try to keep some of them seperated as much as possible. you are gonna have many fluffhead daze and go through some funky stages with your hair, but just keep rocking the crazy hair cuz it'll be worth it! plus its the adventure that your hair goes on. enjoy it. good luck, peace and love

For the uni dread, whenever you start to feel obvious knots forming, just pull them slowly away from the rest, so that it pushes knots down to the base of the dreads, instead of just tearing the hair.
