I used to consume significant amounts of caffeine and sugar thinking it was the way to wake up fully in the morning. It was a physical stimulant for me but it didn't really make me feel alert, awake, or healthy. It still took me about half a day to become fully awake and alert. It also took longer than usual to fall asleep.

I stopped eating things like coffee and donuts which are junk food. I used to like those things, mainly because I was socialized into thinking eating them was the best way to wake up fully in the morning. Boy, was I wrong.

I changed my diet and started eating more deep green leafy vegetables and multi-grain foods. This made me feel fully awake within a couple minutes of waking up when it used to take a half day. It also gave me an even energy level throughout the day. Also, I no longer have the jitteriness and perspiration I had when I was doing coffee and donuts. I don't have trouble falling asleep like I did when I was on caffeine.

Caffeine gives me heart palpitations. I usually just run it. Sometimes ginkgo helps me stay alert... Ginseng is good fro people who are not sensitive, but it tends to make me a little jittery. Also, my father in law has prostate cancer, and the doc told him to stop taking ginseng because it boosts testosterone or something of the sort... Not that I need to worry about that much, but I thought I'd put it out there.

A product called Perfect Food by Garden of Life works well for me. It's a powder comprised of green leafy vegetables. Shortly after I started using it, I felt fully awake and alert within a minute or so of waking. I had never felt like that in my life. It felt like a lightbulb was on inside my head. It doesn't cause me insomnia either like caffeine sometimes does and doesn't cause nervous jitteriness. I sleep much better now.

I used to laugh at ads that referred to nutrients that were supposedly 'brain food' thinking that it was a joke. I don't think that way about nutrients anymore. I'm not saying that certain types of food can make you smart, but particular ones for me improve my awakeness and mental alertness and give me an even energy level throughout the day without side-effects.

Well naturopaths have known that for years and now many mainstream medical people are finally agreeing that herbal, nutritional and supplements do make a difference. It is really great it works well for you. :)

I use to drink massive amounts of coffee, at least two pots a day. Now I have two cups only in a day. Rest of the day water (usually at least 8 bottles) or natural juice and in the evening I tend to have green tea, but sometimes still enjoy a regular tea.

A problem with caffeine and other stimulants in cultures where they have been used extensively by the mainstream to address issues such as lack of energy and awakeness is that it can be perceived as the only answer. Other modalities, such as nutrition, are often neglected. It can get to the point where mainstream research and marketing focuses extensively only on how many different ways one can incorporate caffeine into various food products and how high the caffeine level can one go to maximize the stimulating effect without causing morbidity and lawsuits.

I can see some usefulness of caffeine or other stimulants if you are forced at times to be awake for long periods or for short-term bursts of physical activity. Using high high doses of caffeine long-term may be a useful approach for the sake of achieving job performance but it's not always the healthiest one. Proponents of caffeine will sometimes argue that while it's not nutritious, it's not nearly as deleterious on the health as other type of stimulants.

I think with most coffee drinkers that I know personally, myself included when I was drinking far more, the habit creeps up on you. You just keep filling up the cup and for a little bit it works as you get the initial rush but then you tend to crash, so you have another cup.

I stopped drinking so much because at one point what was available as coffee was horrid, so my sister would stop and bring me two cups. The first week I lowered my intake I had the most horrific headaches. I have not increased again because I do not miss the other 10 or more cups I use to drink. I do still enjoy my two morning ones though, something about the smell of coffee and taste for me. :)

i stopped all caffeine intake about 6 years ago due to it making my heart arrhythmias worse. had a can of coke in that time and it gave me uncontrollable shaking and shit. caffeine's one hell of a drug.

recently i am considering not only going back on it but going up a level to coffee which i have never been a fan of.

Back around the early 80s, there was a medical research paper about how caffeine in modest amounts can cause heart rhythm problems in some people. The media reported it and it became part of the impetus behind the big anti-caffeine craze in the 80s, particularly in the U.S.

7-up starting running commercials raving about how it never had caffeine and never would. Postum, a non-caffeine wheat-based beverage, became popular again. Decaf became popular also. Check out youtube for all the decaf commercials in the 80s featuring Robert Young. :)

Now the pendulum has swung to the opposite extreme and high caffeine is the rage again.

Interestingly, Kraft stopped manufacturing Postum a couple years ago. Maybe the demand for it went down due to the high-caffeine craze that's been going since the 90s.

I know caffeine is in products that we have no clue it is even in common products, in restaurants it is even used as bases for many gravies and marinades......

I just wondered why with having a heart issue with caffeine before that ruski was considering not only having cola again but increasing to coffee which by far has higher levels. :)

I wondered if I missed a reason in another post.

If you had that problem with coffee before or caffeine, you night want to try this product. Teeccino, it has no caffeine. Made with barley, figs, dates almonds carob and ramon nuts. I only had the original and it tastes like coffee and will give you energy but no caffeine. Might be an alternative, unless you have nut allergies.

Good luck in med school! :)

    all the time.
i have a bebe coffee maker in my room for when i wake up on those early mornings and also have them for the smokey evenings at home.
i also can't have a burger without a caffeinated beverage.
my favorite pop though is gingerale. its not so bad.

even still after all the caffeine i consume, if i have any within 2 hours of bedtime, i'm up all night.

    (that includes tea)

when you have a caffeine rush, just take a hit and you'll feel sleepy after :p works for me atleast.

I drink 3-4 cups a day. My ex had never had coffee in her life and one day while I was drinking some ,she decided to try a cup. It really screwed her up-she acted like she was on meth.

Yes, yes it is. Over the summer I stupidly armed myself with a bottle of caffeine pills and a room without a clock, intending to stay up all night. Since I have no natural sense of time, I ended up popping another caffeine pill probably every half hour or so, MAYBE every hour. I had a gram and a half of caffeine (which is about 10-13 cups of coffee's worth, I think, depending on the type of coffee) over a couple of hours and got ridiculously sick. Besides dry heaving (because I hadn't eaten anything) and having to pee every five minutes or so, my vision, hearing, and perception of time and space were all affected--and not in a pleasant way. I had no idea caffeine could affect a person in such a way, so I was freaking out. It felt horrible and I thought I was never going to get my head back. Plus I felt nauseous and hung over for two days afterwards.
I was too scared to touch caffeinated drinks for a few months. Obviously that's only going to happen to you if you're really stupid, but it still scares me.

I just remembered-one time while traveling from Seattle to California,I somehow came across some of those coffee beans covered in chocolate. They tasted so good I ate a BAG of them. I think I levitated about 3 feet in the air every time a noise louder than the soft swish of material against skin happened anywhere within 1000 feet of me and my eyes looked like piss-holes in the snow!
