-My daughter says that if I wanted dreads Id have to shave my head first and then keep skrewin my hair up as it grows out. -Is this true? -Couldnt I just start off with the hair I got and skrew it up? -Why would I have to shave my head first?
I can't imagine why you would have to do that. If it is past your cheek bones, then it is at a good length to begin dreading. I highly recommend getting a pro to dread your hair if you want nice and even dreads. Be careful with what kind and how much wax is put into your hair if any at all. The wax can help a bit but is not extremely important for the dreading process. But anyway, unless your hair is severely damaged or something, there is really no reason that I can think of for you to shave your head. Ben.
please man don't back comb, the main reason for dreads is no longer cutting or combing your hair so let it matt don't comb and wax it, but no you don't need to start from a shaven head you can put dreads in with a simple platt tequnique unfortuately as simple as it is i'm shit at explanations sorry.
Just wash with dr bronners or natural tee tree shampoo and leave you hair alone, then eventualy you'll have some nice dreads but dont chicken out after 6 months . or go to www.rockthoselocks.com theres a dread forum on the site .lots of info.
But wash it every once and a while, havin' a clean head every once and a while can help. Not to much... moderation Peace

hmmm... I have a dreadlock forum up and running in the personal forums section if anyone has any questions. To clear up a few things I've heard here. Our hair is meant to naturally dreadlock over time. It use to easily before people started pumping our soaps full of conditoners and vitamins. What you need to do if you would like to let them form naturally is scrap the commercial shampoos and conditoners. Buy a soap specfically made for dreadlocks or a bar soap with no fragrance and additives. Ones with tea tree, lemon, or rosemary work well since they help with the process. If you just stop washing your hair all together it will drag the process out and the knots will slip out of your hair. Think about it, our hairs have been changed... they are not the same as our ansestors because they were not raised washing their hair with soaps full of additives that cause your hair to produce more oils and such. Wash it about once a week. And what is wrong with backcombing? Honestly, the dreadlocks have the same growing process to go through backcombed or not. They will undread and dread up again over time if they are not happy with the form they are in. Taking a comb to your hair once is just establishing them, beyond that they have the same journey ahead as a head full of naturally established dreadlocks. Whatever road you take to get them it truely starts as they start knotting up being if you choose to help them once or not. http://hipforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=209
Telling someone not to backcomb, well it depends on the reason for them to get dreads-if they are doing b/c they like the style then there is no reason for them not to backcomb. Having dreads all boils down to the person and why they want them and what it means to them! And as far as not washing-Washing helps the locking process, even the motion of washing em helps move em around and tangle more. Just dont use and conditioner and try to find an all natural 'poo. The only reason you dont want to over wash you dreads is because they are like lil sponges and the retain water longer than straight hair and if you dont let em dry they will start to mold and that would be no fun.
