    Off hand, has anyone here gone for a body fat % assessment? Specificly those who think they're over weight. The BMI index isn't all there is to it however getting a BMI can be a hell oof a lot more useful in providing realisticand healthy goals. just my two bits.

    ye I had an empedance test done with a fitness sasensment at my gym

    theas are three three most comon ways theymeasuretake body fat

    the 1st and least acurate is by, is by body, limb measurments and, measurments of skin folds, ie they are going to pinch you

    2nd way is by taking an electrical impedance, they atach an electrode to one hand and one foot and run a curant through you. this is more acurate , but tends to exagerate. it will show lean peopl as leaner than they are, and fat people as fatter than they are. also how mouch food you ate or how much water yuve drank can sway the results a few percent

    the third way is considerd the most acutate, but this requiers the use of water tank, basicly they weigh you on land and then under water, and campare the two weights and run some sort of math forumula. if your fat enough to float you gona have a few problems with this one :D

    a BMI of 15 is considered underweight,I could see why your doctor might worry worry. normal is 19--25ish

    Autum who said I'm back? Like a saint I appear as vision to all my children to lead them to a greater light, and the salvation of the great communist god. How've you been?

    To Shine - 15 BMI yeah a BF % would not be a bad idea. while there might be concern here's the trick, BMI is not an estimate of body fat or a measure of anything other than societal trend. when I have a Body fat percentage of 8 or less (actual fat mass) I still have a BMI that tells me I've already had a coronary. So yeah BMI is not the nd all and be all, but do get a check done :)

    cousinin - I'm not going to argue with you too much about the benifits of one method over another, however all tests have their weak points. The caliper test is more accurate the more test locations that are used and if used by a good practitioner can be accurate within 1%. Even electrical impedence has a 3% margin of error because it under estimates very lean people and over estimated very fat people. The best method without a doubt is boiling the remains and weighing the contents, however it's a test you can only do once.

    any one reading this thread should keep in mind The BMI index is absolutly useless for a lot of people.the reason is that as it dose not take into acount things like frame size or lean body body mass. its just based on poplutaion averages for hight and weight

    -
    using me as an example

    by grace of genetics I'm built like a mini linebacker, so My BMI is 32, which would put me into obesity territory. but if you go by % body fat im on the high side of normal. im about 18%, probably less by now, as I've gained weight and my waist has shrunk a few inches.

    obese is conidered 25% or more fat.
