    Consciousness seems to be a direct function of the brain, especially considering someone's internal and non physical conscious can drastically be altered by physical things that happen to the brain. Unfortunately lights going out seems like the most likely outcome post death. Even those case of post death, people who have in fact been dead for some minutes can be explained as part of the larger overall collective unconscious onto why people constantly see the same things in near death experiences, while physically the hormones/chemicals that make the brain work are still fully there along with lingering electrical activity in neurons. Especially keep in mind most people slip out of physical consciousness before brain activity begins to stop. So live up life.

    Well like I said, anecdotal evidence and "feel-good" feelings from drugs just aren't very compelling to me.

    what about independant past life memory reseach?...Ian Stevenson is someone who has catalogued thousands of cases. he interviews children with past life memories, then visits the villages they described to him (sometimes on the other side of the planet), and interviews the past life family they described to him, who can confirm the childs story. its enough to make one wonder....

    to me, holding the notion that some form of life persists after death is not an unreasonable stance to take, all things considered. its not an unfounded belief, it is a very real possibility supported by a slew of suggestive observations.

    thats an assumption, not a certainty.
    we can say that life is present in organisms that dont have a brain. i can observe that my houseplants move towards the sun when their view is obstructed and the light is within their reach... they lack a nervous system, but its clear that they have some way of recieving sensory input. and even without a nervous system they have some way of responding to that sensory input.

    ....just somthing else to think about...

    That's not conscious thought though, that's just purely physical reaction specifically because plants are living organisms. Most of the parts of my body are alive too but I know my bones, muscles, ect don't maintain their own independent nervous system or thought processes, ect, yet notice those parts of the body still know where to grow.

    I think you guys are defining conciousness in different ways and that is leading to misunderstanding.
    Archemetis is referring to general awareness. Yes plants and one celled organism's are conscious and aware of thier surroundings and react accordingly.

    Syd you are referring to Self Awareness more than conciousness. Thought, as you are using the term, is a function of being self-aware.

    Two completely different things.

    Quite frankly, anything that possess' life, possess' conciousness and an awareness of thier surroundings.
    Conciousness seems to be a property of life.

    As far as life after death is concerned let me just referr to this, with an emphasis on the first law;

    "Laws of Thermodynamics

    The field of thermodynamics studies the behavior of energy flow in natural systems. From this study, a number of physical laws have been established. The laws of thermodynamics describe some of the fundamental truths of thermodynamics observed in our Universe. Understanding these laws is important to students of Physical Geography because many of the processes studied involve the flow of energy.

    First Law of Thermodynamics

    The first law of thermodynamics is often called the Law of Conservation of Energy. This law suggests that energy can be transferred from one system to another in many forms. Also, it can not be created or destroyed. Thus, the total amount of energy available in the Universe is constant. Einstein's famous equation (written below) describes the relationship between energy and matter:

    E = mc2
    In the equation above, energy (E) is equal to matter (m) times the square of a constant (c). Einstein suggested that energy and matter are interchangeable. His equation also suggests that the quantity of energy and matter in the Universe is fixed.

    Second Law of Thermodynamics

    Heat cannot be transfer from a colder to a hotter body. As a result of this fact of thermodynamics, natural processes that involve energy transfer must have one direction, and all natural processes are irreversible. This law also predicts that the entropy of an isolated system always increases with time. Entropy is the measure of the disorder or randomness of energy and matter in a system. Because of the second law of thermodynamics both energy and matter in the Universe are becoming less useful as time goes on. Perfect order in the Universe occurred the instant after the Big Bang when energy and matter and all of the forces of the Universe were unified.

    Third Law of Thermodynamics

    The third law of thermodynamics states that if all the thermal motion of molecules (kinetic energy) could be removed, a state called absolute zero would occur. Absolute zero results in a temperature of 0 Kelvins or -273.15° Celsius.

    Absolute Zero = 0 Kelvins = -273.15° Celsius
    The Universe will attain absolute zero when all energy and matter is randomly distributed across space. The current temperature of empty space in the Universe is about 2.7 Kelvins."

    If you really consider what these three laws state and extrapolate, it's some pretty powerful shit man!

    "Life must be preparation for transition to another dimension!" - Raja Ram

    So live life well, love and let be loved. Try to make at least 3 people smile every day before you go to sleep. The more people you make life more enjoyable, more people will make your life more enjoyable. What will happen after the body dies nobody can say for sure, but how will you live life while you are alive only you can decide. I would like to believe that when the body dies its not over, but untill I find out, the only thing I can do is enjoy this part and to try to be better person every single day then the day before. If everybody was living by this rule, we wouldn't need police, jails, punishment...... Nobody can punish me that much like I can hate my self for beeing a bad person. But even if that happens, nobody is perfect, we shouldn't loose faith in ourself, we should move on, become better and promise ourself that something like that will never happen again. It is easy to forgive somebody else, but forgiving yourself is the toughest thing to do, and if everybody could be their own judge and jury this world would be much better place.

    Peace and love!!!

    We don't know much, but what we do know is that there are things that go against our natural logical instict. So therefore we know nothing.
