I don't think giving you her first name is such a good idea. There are very few people who know what she went thru before she killed herself. If she was your older sister, and you thought the only reason she killed herself was because she was having emotional problems, I think that is something you could live with rather than knowing that your sister/daughter/ or friend killed herself because she was gang-raped and could not handle it. There is more to the story than I am revealing and I would rather keep these things to myself.

Damn dude, I feel for you. I hope you realize it wasn't your fault and you had good intentions for her.

This person wasn't exactly a stranger: it was someone I had known for weeks. Have you even read this thread??? or are you just talking without thinking?

You would have made a great digger in the sixties. You wouldn't have trusted people as readily as most people did back then- myself included. You're definitely right about predators. I started referring to them as sharks on dry land. Once they smelled or saw weakness in someone, they were all over them - trying to get whatever it was they were looking for. What happened to this girl was just the tip of the iceberg. Gang rapes, people getting ripped off, and beatings were commonplace. The reason I started this thread was to show these innocent children that the hippie movement wasn't really all that great. It had it's moments but there was an awful lot of shit that went down- and I'm speaking from experience. Maybe I should write a book and call it 'Nightmare on Haight Street". Paradise can become parasitic in the blink of an eye- and it did.

It's too bad. When I go to the Haight now I see alot of the wrekage of that shit. Alot of people who would have helped once won't now because of that parasite element. You let someone in because you want to help them and next thing you know you have shit stuff missing. One of the new tricks used by street dealers in the Haight is if someone owns a Volcano or other vaporiser somebody will dump the remnants into a baggie and resell it. Sinse the vaporsier only heats up the pot and not burn it all you get is vegitation with no THC. It still looks like pot. Alot of street kids with Pitbulls to intimidate people while ripping them off. The alure of Haight Street for me kind of wore off once I got there and hung out a few times. Telegraph in Berkeley has alot less of that crap now. I think people went to the Haight to party and Telegraph to protest so it was a different hippie vibe.

    Peace Out,

That's true and I've tried to point it out, too. There were a lot of low-lifes who took advantage of hippie ideals and the hippie ethic.

What happened to this girl is a terrible tragedy, and the memory of it a back-breaking burden to carry around. I know you feel somehow responsible, but the fact is suicide is ultimately a personal choice. She didn't have to kill herself. I'm not trying to cast aspersion on her ... if I were in her situation, perhaps I would have done the same thing.

But the point is ... assuming blame for someone else's suicide is a futile exercise. Misguided or no, it was her choice. It's the ultimate expression of personal freedom, if you will.

The best we can do, as those left behind, is to learn a lesson from the tragedy. Life is for the learning.

You poor thing; don't blame yourself for this, there was no way you could have possibly known what would happen. I hope you can work through this and that your friend is now at peace :)

Obviously you did not know them as well as you thought, so I believe my original statement remains sound, perhaps it was you who were lacking street savvy...

Ad hominem attacks, a trademark of your post's.

Pax, you do not have a bad memory from the 60's. Memory is living tissue. What you suffer from is misapprehension of your current circumstance.

I really don't want to discuss this with you. You're entitled to your own opinion and you've voiced it. Thank you.

I'm not suffering. I've come to terms with what happened back then. This thread was just to show young kids that life wasn't that great back in the sixties.

I'm sorry about that Pax. I used to go to the haight in 66-67 and have a great time, but when I was passing thru there in 68, I saw a big differance and I did not linger. "The bad always drives out the good". There's an old saw that was applicable in the Haight. I saw it elsewhere and it continues to happen. Happened to so many communes back then.I'm sure you remember. As fantastic as some of those days were, scum seems to rise to the top.
