"Pink Floyd & Philosophy" by George A. Reisch

"Careful With That Axiom, Eugene!" :)

What does the power of great art have to do with madness? Should psychedelic drugs make us doubt the evidence of our senses? How did power, sadism, and conformity turn education into thought control? (not that we need either). Can a rock band keep its identity as its members change? What can we learn from the synchronicities between The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wizard of Oz? Did Friedrich Nietzsche foreshadow Syd Barrett? When did you realize that you are the hole in reality? How can you have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat? The existential, cinematic music of Pink Floyd made them one of the most influential and recognizable rock bands of all time. They didn't do it by leaving their audiences comfortably numb, but by unsettling, disturbing, questioning, and criticizing. And if anything's still eluding you, Sunshine, you might find it in Pink Floyd and Philosophy.

I just thought I'd throw this out there for you guys.
Pink Floyd is my favorite band, and it was really interesting reading about them in this context.
pick it up one day, it's great!

That's interesting. My favorite band as well. I find that I can apply their music to almost anything, the urge to flee confinments of everyday life (point me at the sky), the social and political problems that still and probibly always will plaque the world (animals) to the joys of remembering childhood (piper at the gates of dawn) even the delightfuly weird breakfast after a long night of psychadelics (alans psychadelic breakfast) Yeah, i'm sold, i'll be picking this up..

There are just too many answers to life in Floyd lyrics..it's almost unreal.

I wish they could smooth things over and Rog would be back in. He is the word master

Floyd fan for almost 40 years...You re-arrange me 'till I'm sane. .. well almost ;)

These books started showing up about five or six years ago. I think it started with the Simpsons and philosophy. They are generally pretty good. I have read several of them. South Park and Philosophy is my favorite. For the most part, they are not hard core philosophy but more like an introduction to general philosophical topics using the pop culture phenomenon of choice as examples. They're definitely good ways to get into a certain topic, but you will have to some research to get further into the topics.

I have not read Pink Floyd and Philosophy yet. That will definitely have to go on the reading list though. That and Grateful Dead and Philosophy and Bob Dylan and Philosophy.
