This is basically a recap of my night seeing Shpongle. I consider this the 2nd best Dj performance that i've seen in my life, right behind The Chemical Brothers. I dosed 20 mgs of 2ci at 9:30. There was an opening act that came on at 10 and played for about 45 minutes that was amusing and fun to come up to on the 2ci but they weren't particularly good. Shpongle came on at 11 and played to a psychedelic backdrop and dancers dressed in flourescent tribal masks danced throughout the night. There was also a artist painting a pharoh on the side of the stage that became more intricate as the night wore on. Now to the music.... Right out of the gate he opened with my favorite song on the new album "I am You." You could tell alot of the crowd really liked this one as well as the energy was high all around. Next he went straight into "Shponglese Spoken Here" the 1-2 punch I thought there was no way he was going to do but sure enough he went straight for it. The 3rd song was one of the only non Shpongle songs of the night it was "Gamma Goblins" which is a Hallucinogen song and he played the Ott remix which was some nice dub and a different pace than the rest of the evening. "Ineffable mysteries" was the fourth song in the set list and set the tribal psychedelic trance tone that would persist throughout the remainder of the evening. I took a small dose of 4 meo pcp later in the evening and still up from the effects of these as I write, so if it seems a bit scattered that's why. Here's a set list that I remember from the evening, those first 4 songs were pretty much the only songs played in their entirety. I am you Shponglese Spoken Here Gamma Goblins (Ott remix) Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland Dorset Perception Behind Closed Eyes When Shall I be Free Star Shpongled Banner Beja Flor Mentalism my head feels like a frisbee Divine Moments of Truth The 6th Revelation Walking Backwards Through the Cosmic Mirror Around the world in a tea daze The Nebbish Route/Falling Awake I also met a hipforums memeber and everyone around seemed to enjoy their night!
I loved last night, and it was such an pleasure to meet you. I have never heard anything like sphongle before, and I Must say, ia m very very impressed. Trance has come a long way from when i was first introduced to it.
yay! I had a lot of fun even though the 2c-i I took made me feel rooted to the spot and I couldn't get my body to dance even though I really really wanted to. :[ I liked the opening group! They played "happy" music that I am actually listening to right now after I finally figured out what their group is called. "C-mon and Kypski." yay! Yeah, not nearly as good as Shpongle but still fun to listen to. The dancers were cool to watch. I think the painting was more South American or maybe Mexican (Mayan? Aztec?) looking than a Egyptian Pharaoh. I want it for my room! :] Damn, I can't believe you actually remembered all the songs he played in order. Geezuz.
I am pretty sure it was south american, bc I looked him up (sphongle, and he has a lot of background with dmt and south america it seems). I am so amazed at how gorgeous they can make trance now, when I first went to an rave, I was so young, and trance was very different. Ithink more simple. I am definitely goign to see sphongle again next time they are in the area. they were amazing!!!
the guys been around since 1998 with shpongle. Its not like he's new. He's just a genius at production and finally getting some well deserved recognition in the u.s. They also have the 'tool'' syndrome where they release an album like once every 4 years. Its certainly alot different than trance made by like tiesto and Paul oakenfold. I didn't specify it was from egypt huldra, I just used Pharoh for lack of a better term but you two are probably right in that it was more represenartive of south American artwork.
Here is a preview from the show, sound quality is obviously not the best When Shall I be Free https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nampO-EkoX0"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nampO-EkoX0 Shpongolese Spoken Here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_8m_q5PXF4&feature=related"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_8m_q5PXF4&feature=related I am you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epMVbAkULN8&feature=related"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epMVbAkULN8&feature=related
I saw this same show in NYC a couple weeks ago, i want to add to your setlist. Not in order, of course, but these are the songs i remember hearing. I was rolling balls at this show and can remember almost every song they played because they all felt so significant to me. Around the World in a Tea Daze (remix) Connoisseur of Hallucination Crystal Skulls Once Upon the Sea of Blissful And The Day Turned To Night (remix) Levitation Nation My Head Feels Like a Frisbee (remix) Outer Shpongolia Star Shpongled Banner
^ my bad behind closed eyelids. He just spun the second half of that song which was alright with me as that's the better half, eventhough I like the build of the whole song. Those panning effects towards the end always send my head spinning I love it. Yah I think he played 'and the day turned to night' too like in the middle of the set but I didn't really recognize the remix of it and I rarely listen to that 20 minute song anyways. It was his only truly ambient song of the evening. Excellent setlist for the dancefloor.
