I feel enraged and sad at seeing how neglegence of rules (be it accidental or on purpose to cut travel time) has led to the most recent blow to Mother Earths face just happening at the Great Barrier Reef: (Photo by dpa press agency) This is the Chinese coal bulk freighter Shen Neng 1, stuck on the Great Barrier Reef, currently leaking part of its 1,000-ton load of fuel. According to Queensland's premier Anna Bligh, the salvage operation may take a few weeks. Currently, the freighter is imminent to break up which could lead to all of its fuel load to be spilled onto the reef at once. Sad, enraged and definitely not in the mood to wiggle my toes at this, ~*Ganesha*~
UGH! How stupid and ignorant are they? Think about the poor reef with the billions of lives ust being poisoned by that shit!
Earlier this week i read that 1/3 of the oceans reefs are dead, or dying due to global warming, and fishing nets being dragged across them. Now this crap happens!! Bad news for the eco system!! I read that the ship hit the reef at full speed, 15km outside the shipping lane. And it has on board 950 tonnes of oil, and about 65,000 tonnes of coal. Also, a chemical that was not expected to have a lasting environmental impact would be sprayed on the oil to disperse it, they say. Maybe they can get some dawn detergent and wipe off every enemie, sponge, and coral one by one.
Well, there's now good and bad news on this subject... the good news: a larger oil spill was averted and that ship is afloat again. The bad news: on hitting the reef, the vessel grated over it, destroying a 3 km long strip of corals. Ecologists estimate that it'll take at least ten years for that part of the reef to recover. Another wound on Mother Nature's beautiful body. ~*Ganesha*~
We are destroying our enviroment with chemicals that are claimed to be safe. Seems really convenient to have this miracle chemical to spray around.
More News: Anti-barnacle Paint from Coal Tanker Continues to Kill Great Barrier Corals Along Two-Mile Crash Scar. http://www.care2.com/causes/environ...nues-to-kill-coral-along-two-mile-crash-scar/ So when did poison paint on the bottom of ships become a good idea?? Saving money on scraping and repaint = profit.
Indeed it is... yet, the Shen Neng 1 incident has become something of a minor road accident compared to the explosion and sinking of that BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, where now oil keeps spilling from the underwater drilling holes at a depth of 1,500 meters... If that Chinese freighter was a blow to Mother Earth's face, this incident feels more like a constant beating-up, leaving Her badly bruised and bleeding. This, for sure is sad. Very sad only. ~*Ganesha*~
