Because we have to ability to see that a motel maid is not much of a threat to anyone, but a heroin smuggler is. Nor is it "rocket science" to have the ability to comprehend that the issue of illegal immigration is separate from the issue of how this Arizona law attempts to deal with it. "Declared war"? Really? LOL .. and you don't think that's an "emotional" response? It's so easy to fall into this "enemy" mindset. Whether it's Jews or Irish or Asians or Hispanics or blacks, why must you see everyone as "enemies"? In the 50's the right wing told us the communists were hellbent on taking over the country, then in the 60's they said it was the hippies and "undesirables". Now they say it's the illegals. It's always somebody, isn't it? But if you really want to talk about "declaring war", you ought to think about the drug cartel. Those people are the closest thing to an invasionary force we have seen.
The drug cartel falls under the "illegal" umbrella. All illegals have declared war on the US and basically thumbed their noses at us. Send them all to the back of the line. As far as the drug cartel is concerned, 3 mobile infantry divisions spread alone the border should be able to stop that.
Nobody wants fruit picking, grain harvesting, plowing, ect because they pay shit. Those jobs don't have to pay shit wages and I'll tell you how I know. I've worked on some big ranches,I've worked on their roofing,I've seen how they live in their huge houses, their kids drive brand new cars to school, and they are the upper echelon of society (if you want to call it that) in Fresno,King and Tulare counties, the so-called bread basket of the nation. I know many of them personally. They could pay MORE to folks who do that kind of work--but lots and lots of money is never enough for some people, including those of whom I speak. Yes,if they paid living wages, most anyone would be glad to get those jobs.
Wow I'm surprised to see how many people are wanting to send them back, maybe the only reason I support them is I am of Mexican descent, my mom came here illegally to try to get a better life, and so did much of my family, they all work their asses off so they can get half of what you guys have, and you guys all just complain. Maybe I'm out of line, but I don't see them as illegal, I see them as people trying to come to have a better life, and who am I to stop them from trying. Also Scratcho major changes have to be made for "most anyone" to want those jobs, also why would corporations want to pay more when they can hire hard working people who rarely complain and will take little money? Just stating my opinion
Oh,they don't want to pay more or change either. I have said amnesty should be given to hard working people from the south that are here--after the border is secured. Pay me 20 bucks an hour and I'll pick the shit outta some fruit. I'm talkin' all day long!
Oh, I must of misread your post. Yea I definitely agree with you, It wouldn't be smart to let every one legal, just the ones who don't take advantage of the system.
I agree with TwoDogs that a general boycott of Arizona is hitting everyone in the gut, especially the ones who can least afford it. It would seem to me that the Democrats have winked at illegal immigration because it can potentially bring in new voters. Republicans and their business backers get cheap labor and undercut the wages of local construction workers, carpenters and landscapers among other things. Everyone wins except the average American. America needs a certain amount of legal immigration to support the social security system when the boomers and Gen X'er's start retiring. There are not enough young working citizens to take care of our old folks right now and it will only get worse. Too much immigration will undercut wages, if nothing is done to stop the downward pressure on wages, but if these workers were unionized and their wages protected, we could have the best of both: more taxpayers and stable wages. I have lived in a majority hispanic area and most of them make great neighbors. We just need to do this thing the right way. I tend to favor local control of government as much as possible, but it would be best if all states act in tandem on this issue or Texas, New Mexico and California become the new trouble spots.
