I was wondering if the alkaloid thebaine, found naturally in opium and opium latex, really reduces the pleasure of the poppy pod tea experience. i have found a legit source for pods, but i do not feel like wasting $30.00 on a bunch of pods if it is going to end up giving me a crappy feeling. I heard thebaine is a stimulant rather than a depressant (and not even in a good way), which kind of has me wary now of buying these pods. Overall, are the effects of thebaine from the raw tea generally unnoticeable? Does the thebaine content make the poppy pod tea experience really crappy and not worth it? If so, is there any way minimize the effects of thebaine, or get rid of it all together? Thanks a lot.

This is quite a tricky question to answer (to save you having to wade thru the below, the basic summary is: you're gonna have to try it and see!)

It's more that any 'opium' experience is noticeably different to 'opiate x' experience. So while morphine, heroin, codeine, oxy, all feel pretty much the same, and opium is noticeably similar, it is quite different to the general opiate groups. This is mainly due to the presence of different alkaloids, one of them - and the main one, I think, other than morphine and codeine - being thebaine.

The amount of thebaine in opium poppies will vary from plant to plant, just like the other alkaloids.

If you haven't done opiates before, or don't do em a lot, the chances are you'll find a well-brewed dose of opium tea a fairly intense and probably enjoyable experience that just happens to kinda remind you of opiates. Being a regular opiate user changes your perspective - for example, I don't enjoy opium that much now, because I'm annoyed that it isn't heroin, but my tolerance to heroin will still block the effects of opium tea.

If you do opiates a lot, it's unlikely you'll be so interested in opium and posting these kinds of questions (again, if you have a bunch of morphine ready for injection, you're not going to be debating over opium!)

So ultimately - try it and see. Plenty of people love opium, and with good reason. I don't like it, because it's not skag.

Oh and also, there are ways of purifying opium tea, which is the only way you'd eliminate thebaine, but they require a fair amount of effort if not basic chemistry knowledge. Eliminating thebaine from opium is probably about the same effort as finding some heroin down the road.

Great post. Thanks a lot. I've never done nothing more than pop a few hydrocodone's a few days at a time for a few weeks, and sip the occasional cup of lean. One question I have though is if opium contains all these nice alkaloids, like morphine and codeine (not referencing to thebaine), combined into one substance, how come it isn't as enjoyable as doing codeine and morphine by themselves? I would think the two being together would compound the pleasure if they were combined with each other, but obviously that doesn't seem to be the case. This question excludes stronger more manufactured opiates, like heroin or oxy. thanks again for the info bro.
