I was watching an interesting video about the development of human like robots. It took them twenty something years to teach the robot how to walk like a human. The robot can learn new things and identify different objects and name different objects, it can almost maneuver like a human... What if eventually they make a robot that looks like human, walks and talks like a human and learns and thinks and reacts like a human?!?! .....that what these human-like robot development companies are aiming for... Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Think about it, I can see many people degrading robots with the above characteristics. How are those characteristics different then human characteristics? If robots can think and make decisions and learn and apply different things, if they have emotions and opinions, then isn't it safe to say that they have a consciousness? (computers can be programmed to make conscious-like decisions, and they can also be programmed to have opinions and to consider different possibilities, if enough time is spent on this. This might require a lot of 'disk-space' in the robots memory, but Moore's Law states that the amount of space that can be stored on a single chip doubles every 18 months) I don't know if I like this idea. If human like robots eventually become a reality, it might degrade the human race as a whole. Imagine a human looking robot that looks, talks, and acts EXACTLY like a human would. Some people will simply degrade 'the robot' and they might be 'racist' in a sense b/c 'robots arent real' but to the human eye this will appear aweful! it will be like slavery has become accepted and normal. This will create more of a leveling in society and it will discourage the idea of equality... To the human eye.
I'm about to watch Blade Runner so I think it's a good idea. We will be able to learn so much about ourselves and the best of us will nurture our creations. Doubtless some of us will descriminate against them, however overtime we may become more and more like them ourselves.
These robots will have been PROGRAMMED, therefore everything they do will essentially be programmed into them by HUMANS. None of it will be totally of their own accord...does this not mean they will not in fact be conscious?
That's true, but is Mother Nature/God/the Universe not the only entity/being/thing that can grant consciousness? Technically, all we'd be doing by creating robots would be to program our own thoughts and feelings into an 'empty shell'...and whilst the robot would be able to repeat that which we had programmed into it, it would still not be aware or conscious, no?
People have been acting so much like robots this past decade (well passing), that I really don't see how it could matter. Slavery isn't about equality, it's about power. If in your scenario - the robots have emotions -- there will be debate about if they are human. If they do not - people will humanize them as much as they do service animals.
I've never been comfortable with the idea of human-like robots. So many things can go wrong. Not necessarily with the robots. Humans just have the tendency to mistreat things. Each other. The Earth. Animals. Themselves. Um... everything. Imagine how we'd treat a race of artificially intelligent humanoid machines. I don't think we're civil enough to treat human-like robots any better than slaves. We already think hitting machines is the best way to fix them. Now, I also think humans are getting to the point where we're too lazy to even think for ourselves. We're gonna design these robots to be too intelligent to the point where they can make the most logical decisions for us and we just take their word for it. Kinda like they're big calculators, but, I don't know... life calculators? I'm a little stoned. Sorry if I'm not making sense. XD Anyways, they're gonna end up eventually becoming too smart, blah blah blah, we're gonna piss them off, and boom, they're gonna pick us off one by one. I seriously think that's a bad idea.
Ahah, we are bad at taking care of things, yes. But we have more things to take care of than anything ever has (everything!) Is going to happen unless them smart people decide they don't want the stupid peoples' money enough to make it.
good or a bad thing?... easy.. Its good until they can think on their own and revolt and then we have robot world, with human slaves..
I think there would be bloodshed on both sides, but we would come to regard them with love, especially if they just like us in appearance, as we love to anthropomorphise things and generally consider humans to be important. Ultimately machines will likely outlast us and I hope they will remember us fondly as their creators.
In an effort to achieve immortality we will download our consciousness into our robot bodies. Humanity dies, god is dead, and hatred, greed, and envy are replaced by cold equations, machine logic, and machine politics The decision to exterminate the human races is calculated in a nanosecond Hotwater
