Some bloke said hippies have to believe that Earth is a spirit, or something like that. Is that true?
That is a load of horse shit. What a hippie believes depends on the hippie. A hippie basically defines himself. I define myself as a hippie because I don't agree with how straight society operates and seek passive ways to change it. I question ALL of my leaders and I don't play the greedhead game. I help others whenever possible. I realise the interconnection of all life and do my own little part in the grand scheme to change things by changing myself. And I am honest to a fault. OK so I have long hair and a beard and wear the uniform. But even if I didn't wear the uniform I'd still be a hippie. I've known hippies that are pacifists. And I've known hippies that are gun nuts. I've known hippies that are vegan and I've known hippies that have raised and slaughtered their own food. I have known hippies that are hardcore druggies and I've known hippies that are straightedge. It is up to the individual to define themself and do their part to stop the machine. That is what defines a hippie. Peace Out, Rev J
What's the greedhead game? And what uniform - or was that metaphorical? But judging from your answer, I think... now, I know... I will happilly do this: I'M A HIPPY!
The greedhead game breaks down to the duel philosophy of "I don't have enough" and "how can I get more." Usually what they want more are status symbols. Fancy cars, Larger Homes, More Property, fancy clothes etc. Not the things they need like good food, good friends, love etc. For me the uniform is just a set of clothes that when one wears identifies them with a group of people. For example if you see someone wearing blue pants, a blue shirt, a gun and a badge you look at them you say "Police Officer" that is his uniform. I am honest even if you try to fit into any countercultural group there is a uniform that goes with it. Right now I'm wearing a pair of jeans and a T-shirt with Assata Shakur on it and a pair of sneakers adorned with Bass Clefs and Peace Signs. I have a goatee, sideburns and a greying poneytail. That is A hippie uniform but there are other clothes that you could call a hippie uniform but you kind of get the idea. Peace Out, Rev J
No, if I see someone dressed like that with a gun and a badge, I suspect something dangerous is going on and call the police. I live in England.
For me, a hippy is anyone who doesn't agree with, and makes a conscious decision to go against the way the world currently works. IMO, that's all it takes to be a hippy...a loose definition I know, because if we work from that definition, pretty much every rock icon, rebel, environmentalist, etc. is a hippy. And in a way, they are IMO. The most important thing I must point out, however, is that hippie is in the heart. As RevJC said, one can look the part but never truly be the part, and vice versa. Peace.
Thank you very much Moses. I'd love to do like "Hippie Mythbusters". You know every week debunk a myth the general public has about hippies. You know Week One: All Hippies Take Drugs then take the cameras to a Warf Rat Meeting and interview STS9. Week Two: All Hippies are trapped in the past. Put together a Round Table of discussion with Various Hippies discussing current events. Put up an online survey to discover what myths about hippies they want to see busted. This could catch on. Peace Out, Rev J
