I have a mini green house with toms, chilli's etc. It's starting to get warm here now at around 20c but in my greenhouse it's 30+ should I leave the door open to alow some air to circulate or leave the door closed. The palnts look fine and the chilli's are thriving on it, just a bit worried about the toms, any ideas ???
Most plants do better if they are introduced to cooler temperatures. It makes the plant more hardier. I know an organic producer and she hardens her tomato plants before planting (she only does tomato).
Well I had to take them out anyway cos they were getting too big for it. The mini greenhouse was only about 4foot and I needed the space for my chilli's The Tom are doing fine tho, just thought they would do better in the hot house
Would depend on the variety, though. Indoor or outdoor. I dont have a greenhouse, so I experiment with outdoor varieties. My location, just over a mile from the North Sea, is hardly good Tomato country anyway, so it varies from year to year. Three years ago I picked the last outdoor ones in November ! Last year I got virtually nothing.
I'm growing the same as last year "Gardeners Delight" I didn't have a greenhouse lastyear so I can't compare also I started these alot earlier indoors. It's only a mini greenhouse so I would have to of taken them out at some point anyway. I jus thought that plants liked warmer conditions better ??? but could tollerate colder climates
Yeah, I start mine off indoors, then gradually harden them off in the back yard, before transfering to the allotment [my back yard is north-facing, so doesn't get nearly enough sunlight to go the whole way]. I'm sure I once heard about trials for a new strain bred specially of more northern climes...something about it was being trialled at some airbase in Greenland ? I've grown one called Tornado for the past few years, but this year am trying Outdoor Girl.
