you can do either, cook it probably is easier and taste better if you don't mind the preparation, you will probably trip better too. There is like a dark green part right underneath the 'skin' (outer coating) of the cactus which is the main thing you want to consume.

There are recipes on here http://www.erowid.org/plants/cacti/cacti.shtml. I've had 5 San Pedro trips not one of them has been longer than my longest acid trip. The longest being a 9-10 hour trip on San Pedro the rest have been about 6-8 hours, but it has a 2 hour comeup so take that into account. I have heard some trips like with peyote and probably San Pedro too if you took a big enough dose can be about 12-16 hours. I've heard people say 24 hrs, i'm skeptical. Last time I certainly was feeling slight effects the day after but I was able to get to sleep and stuff.

 

or just grow your own, picking them wild is dangerous, unless you really know what your doing.
