I'm thinking of going to amsterdam on 26th December to chill out for a couple of days during the holiday, will anything be open, most importantly will the coffe shops be open?

Several shops that I have been to and open early between 7:00 and 8:00 am and are within a few minutes walk from central station are the coffee shop's "Central" next to the entrance of the Metro on Prins Hendrikkade. "Barney's" on Haarlemmerstratt and the "Grasshopper" in the red light district. The most for your money will be found at "Central" where they had over twenty different strains of weed and Hashish in a very nice wooden display case for inspection during my last visit in april. Barney's has some outstanding weed on there menu but its pricy they also have a breakfast menu if your really hungry but the quality of the food they now serve leaves a lot to be desired. And,of course, the Grasshopper is a well known tourist trap on the edge of the red light district and just across the street from the old Amsterdam stock exchange that does sell some above average weed for above average prices...:)

I won't be too sure with many (if any?) stores being open on December 26th. The Dutch actually practice two days of Christmas - the 25th and 26th. I'm not sure on the coffeeshop policy regarding that day - my guess would be some will be open, some will be closed. It's not the best day to enjoy Amsterdam I would say. Many people spend their Christmas indoors with family, and as such you might run the risk of Amsterdam not being as vibrant as it can be... I'm sure you'll have fun though :)

We should know this shouldn't we.. Mike? ;) My guess is that the very touristy caffees and coffeeshops will be open.. even in the village I grew up in the pubs were open on Christmas so.. I don't know. But you're right.. it's not the best time but in Amsterdam no time is not-good so.. you'll have fun anyway :)

Thanks guys, I realise that a lot of stuff will be closed but I have to go back to work on the 29th and wanted to squeeze a couple of chill out days in after christmas. As long as I can get a beer and/or smoke and coffee, that'll do for me.

Hey folks - I will be in Amsterdam 24th December til 27th Dec, staying at the Greenhouse Effect. Was there last year and it was pretty cool - it's nice to get away from all the usual Christmas bulls**t @ home sometimes don't you think? Has anyone got any suggestions about stuff going on over Christmas??

Hehe.. funny that you 'escape' your usual Christmas bullshit by coming here while mine is taking place here ;) Don't think I've got a lot of time on those dates since I'm going back and forth between Christmas obligations (christmasdrinks, parents, inlaws etc.).. *sigh*..

I'm sure you will have a wonderful time Velvet! I know the Dutch don't do the Christmas thing the same as we do in the UK so I would imagine you may have less Bull (at least I hope so!)....
Hope you have a fantastic Yuletide!
