I want to say something, and since it's open game here I am going to In Flames can suck my ass. They are an emo little shit heap and some guy recommended them to me. He is not very metal, he is an idiot. Anyone who disagrees is an emo. Done.
Yeah iron is a right **** Mercury is up there with the sound ones though Grew out of most metal although I still have two big cd wallets full of metal...doubt its going to get much playing. Metal/punk gigs are still fucking great though, going to Megadeath in June and saw Slayer and Mastodon there last year too Got knocked out at Slayer though.
You don't grow out of metal, you just start listening to better metal as you get older Though I listen to any genre these days.
You both rock Even worse though, at least on my part, he told me to listen to them because they influenced Opeth.. Very, very, funny.
Did you listen to either of their first two albums? I think In Flames and Opeth were contemporary but they no doubt had some parallel influences.
Not really understanding what I am saying Let's look at lunar Strain and Orchid, there is defiantly similarities (duel guitar etc), but both albums were released in 1994. There is no parallel influence, and 100% no influence from In Flames (when considering Opeth). It was a popular metal type at the time, though I dislike it. Opeth's Morning Rise was much better, though the same stuff once more. It was after that they released this duel guitar style of play was crap and scrapped it (open admission by Mikael). The funniest thing is In Flames were a little better then than they are now, 'cos they are really terrible now. But Opeth have only really good better and better. In Flames do suck in my opinion. I am not enforcing an opinion on anyone, just suggesting how I feel about them. To clarify, at best they sounded like Opeth at their worst, and that was just coincidence.
Opeth has never been as good as they were on Orchid and My Arms, Your Hearse. The shit they are doing now really isn't that interesting at all. Never said In Flames influenced Opeth. But if you're letting your hatred of the former blind you from the fact that they obviously SHARE a number of influences, I suppose that your decision. Also, "gothenburg" was not "a popular style at the time" because it had yet to really solidify, Lunar Strain was one of the first records to draw attention to it. The only real precedents were At the Gates and the random one off "melodic death metal" band which really isn't the same thing as the "gothenburg" sound at all.
I remember I saw In flames at Wacken some years ago (probably 2003) and although you know I'm not a death metal fan at all and so I wasn't familair with their stuff I had the most brilliant crowd surf during their show. It went on and on, awesome memory!
Ive only been going to punk and hardcore gigs recently...just cus of my friends bands and getting in free Its just funny thinking now of when I had hair half way to my ass, in mosh pits every weekend and I remember distinctly saying "techno, jungle and dnb is shit music for shit people that just sit inside with their windows closed spending hours on a keyboard/computer" The irony  considering that now I spend most of my time making jungle and acid/hard tekno and pretty much all my time listening to them. Metal and punk will still be a part of me forever though just my tastes have been refined past most of the shit. Went through a big CoF stage for about a year though and still do like some of thir albums...so cant say much
Yeah lasted from 14 till 16 for me Although much better than my 12 - 13 years when I had a shaved head and listened to rap. Although now I wear trackies again but I now also have long dreads and listen to a bit of every type of music that I used to...just no more nickleback :ack2: never again
To be fair metal is what I listened to a lot more when younger, always on the look out for new, good stuff but as bad fish said your tastes will change. I'm listening to a lot of Usher at the moment, need I say any more?
