A few years ago, nearly everybody I knew whined and complained constantly about their boring, dead-end jobs, and talked about how they would almost rather die than have to go to work there every day. Now most of them are laid off and wish they had their shitty jobs back.
People like to complain.... it gives them an illusion of empowerment when others furnish an audience that will express sympathy- usually so as not to appear rude. It's easier to complain and whine than to actually do something to improve the situation. Chances are that when they held those "shitty" jobs- they "got by" doing as little as they possibly could. In doing that they targeted themselves. They probably carried a "this sucks" attitude with them when they were on the clock. This will get old for people stuck working with them-- likely carrying their load while being subject to a never ending whine string. It gets old and eventually affects how they interact with the co-worker. Basically the whiner's negative energy on the job is the main reason the job sucked. There's a fairly common mindset out there that one is entitled to raises and job security based solely on length as opposed to quality of service. In this day and age that is not true. The thing is, as soon as one lands and begins a job, one is always an item on the expense side of things. With the current "trim the fat" movement toward leaner and more profitable business folks are well advised to ensure each day that their time pays off for their employer. Business is a for profit proposition and if an employee ceases to be productive, he or she becomes excess fat in need of trimming. It's a case where "What have you done for me lately?" really applies. Employment is not an entitlement... never was.
I worked my hardest at my last job, and certainly did not take on any attitude other than a positive one still got laid off. I like to consider it as me leaving, but I knew it was coming. End of, I moan about it, because it wasn't my fault
Sometimes a business is being poorly run. In that case they're doing you a favor by giving you your walking papers.
two people were laid off from my place of work recently. their positions were eliminated by someone somewhere up the ladder. what ended up happening is other employees had to take on their duties in addition to their own, and did not get raises for their now double workloads. that's bullshit. someone higher up the ladder in this company is getting rich while we are forced to do more work for less pay.
in other news regarding my job, we were informed recently that we aren't allowed to have drinks, including water, anywhere except in the break room. also, i found out i may be FIRED because some higher-up decided to review the old security camara footage, and get this - it is considered "stealing" from the company to take one "free sample" that we pass out to customers regularly throughout the day. but if an employee takes one, it is stealing. psshh! i've done some questionable things working at this place, but never thought that taking a free sample was one of them...
haha! first, you can't steal something that's free... but also, taking approximately 1/8 of one cookie is hardly harmful when we THROW AWAY 6 to 8 cookies (and i'm estimating around 40 other pastries) every day. (yes, the waste is sickening - we are not ALLOWED to donate our day-old food! it's ridiculous!) the company is in no way, shape or form losing money by me trying a cookie, and besides - like 1/3 customers ask what I recommend, and in order to answer that question, which pushes sales, i have to have tried the food we sell! and lord knows i'm not about to pay $3 per pastry or $4-5 per drink to try that crap! oh well. i would go so far as to say i am the most productive and hardest working person at that store, so if i got fired it would be their loss.
