I love this concept -- Buy Nothing Day --- November 26th Instead of *buying* into all the Merry Consumerism of the Christmas season, why not rethink exactly what it means to be a consumer in the most consumptive society to ever exist anywhere in the world, in all of history. Take a day to re-evaluate the situation. The more needless crap we buy, the more we deny others basic necessities! Check out the adbusters site: http://www.adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/
Yes, I heard of it. Didn't think it was a worldwide concept. It's gonna be hard for me ( usually buy something to eat at university ) but I'll try, it's worth it and the thought behind it is great.
and then the next day, go out and pick up whatever it was that you didn't get the day before, right? ..... come on, it's going to take a lot more than a fun little "buy nothing day" to make people stop spending; we've got to do it every day.
people keep trying this "buy nothing day" concept. i've yet to see enough people participate for it to have any impact.
it reminds me of the "break the chain" day, where no one buys gas for one day.... people did it for three days or something and didn't even make a dent in oil companies' sales.
The idea is for the retailers to notice. Sort of like the "use wierd cash" movements (black buyers use $2 bills, for example. the idea is the person counting cash will realize the impact of the group) I fast on holidays. That won't change the world, but it changes mine. If but nothing could be a weekend and draw large amounts of "non" participants then a financial shockwave could be made. I "buy nothing" because what little I shop for for holidays/birthdays I've already squirrelled away.
I've heard of buy nothing day, and actually, it's pretty easy for me to follow. Many days are buy nothing days for me.
ive been buying next to nothing for a couple years now, well other than food and necessities, and well DSL bill each month so i can internet, and insurance on the truck but thats cheap too, nov 26 is one of my brother's birthday neat i wont be buying anything that day either, cept maybe something to drink, never know, if i can and have been doing for this long then anyone can do it, imagine all the $ you can save for fun and such, but if you have a family/kids and such then i can see where you couldnt refrain from spending on anything other than necessary this subject could really get opened up and discussed in depth good luck
I don't spend that day in stores anyways...lines are to long, consumers to pushy & grabby. Always hear dumb shopping stories from friends or relatives who got to the store before it even opened just to get shoved around by others and sometimes they never did find some special sale item.
Well I think that's one of the ideas that started the whole Buy Nothing Day concept! Have fun with it on friday ya'll
There are vicious people out there who cannot wait to get their grubby hands on some new toy for their kid or some cheap DVD player, in this case. http://www.adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/newspaper.html Although Americans are often seen as the most consumeristic, greedy, and capitalistic, Buy Nothing Day is a global event. For at least 24 hours, people around the world buy nothing, in an attempt to make a point to the mindless sheep around them who keep on buying. Many people, however, make it a lifestyle, buying only what is absolutely necessary, or going the route of the freegan. http://freegan.info/ I don't see BND as something that is pointless, even if there are no visible effects of it, in terms of retail profits etc. I see tomorrow as a chance to protest, to educate people on the evils of the consumerism machine, to open their eyes, and to not give any of my money to anybody. Because we just don't need all of this shit that we buy, ain't that right? Peace and love to all
I didn't buy a damn thing. But, my folks went shopping at goodwill and found a really cool sweater. heh.
I did all of my Christmas shopping on Friday. Spent a lot of money, but I got it all done, and I don't have to worry about it anymore.
