i think that dreadlocks help you build more confidence about yourself. Its a journey, yeah, maybe a little scary at first, specially how scary you'll look during your fluffhead stages.... but you learn to accept and love it. and then you find others who see that in you and respect it. plus you attract different kinds of people. its kind of like wearing a peace sign 24/7.
stop caring so much and start dreading, you'll care more about your locks than what other people think.

I personally havnt had to deal with any critisism yet luckily, although my dreads are still very new. The only negative comments I have been getting were people were thinking they didnt look like good dreadlocks (probably due to the fact they don't understand dreadlocks don't come like that, but require time. And also most they would see would be very neat looking due to the use of wax and products, hence why they thought mine wern't any good...).

I can't say I was nervous about recieving insults before I started, rather just other things, although really - What can people insult you with about them?

The main things I can think might be about them being dirty, or just the sterotypes that go with them.

However, if you do keep your hair clean like you should, and you don't fit any negative stereotypes, well then you can prove them wrong. Show them what they may be critisizing is not in fact even true, then what have you got to worry.

Yeah now that I read over my post I feel like I made it look like I care a little more than I do. Don't get me wrong I'm still a little nervous, but at the same time no person is going to prevent me from doing it.

You guys are completely right though, as I expected. I just needed a little reassurance I suppose.

Any negative comments I get, I just repeat the same thing back. Usually last until the person realizes I'm just saying the same thing they are.

    Example

    doucher: your hair looks dumb.
    Me: your hair looks dumb.
Doucher: my hair!? Your hairs look all frizzy and dirty!
Me: my hair!? Your hairs look all frizzy and dirty!
    Doucher: dude, are you high?
    Me: dude, are YOU high?

It always works. And it's kinda fun.

I actually gained confidence :p I live in a really reaaally uptight town. Like if i wear a skirt people look at me weird. But no one has said anything yet... then i'll go into the city and blend right in. :p Surprisingly different.

I was pretty damm nervous before, i had wanted to do it since i was about 17 and only managed to do it when i was 21 out of nervousness, which was wasted possible dread years, everyone here at the forum helps that with reassurance about your process

It's just hair, you're talking like you're waiting for the messiah to come round for high tea and he's gon' zap you if you fuck it up.

Why do you think someone's going to walk all over you? I don't get it.

If you walk around acting like your hair's a problem then it WILL be a problem

The way you talk about how you care too much about what people say to the point where it bothers you, then contradict yourself by saying

So you either care or you don't.

The way you talk about all these problems you are convinced you are going to have, I can tell you will not have dreads for long unless you change your mindset fast.

    It's JUST hair.

Before I dreaded my hair I had 101 reasons NOT too,and they were all stupid reasons because I was worried about getting them.

I see now that I was just being silly as it really is only hair,no-one treats me any differently,Ive still got jobs and Ive only had a few weird comments in around 4 years.

I think you should just go for it and you'll wonder what you were ever worried about :)

Welcome to Carolina country! I was a very high-maintenance person before, but I didn't care much about what others thought. You have to be confident, and think about beauty in a different way. People are going to notice you more when you have locks, you'd better be prepared! Good lock!

somehow the idea of you traveling in a large group seems like a good idea, senor smart ass ;)

ot: its just hair... don't get so worked up about it :) honestly i haven't had any actual bad comments about my hair and i'm frequently around old ladies and conservative bastards. most people don't say anything unless they want to compliment it. other than my brother who's just an asshole and likes to make fun of my hair :D
