What I've read this year: From Prison to Praise - a campy poorly written frolic through a snakeoil salesman preacher from being a draft dodger to writing this book! Quick read. Howl's Moving Castle - good, sweet, colorful, old-fashioned sort of tale with a twist or two - adored it Uzumaki - entertaining Japanese horror manga written by the great Junji Ito, truly a master of terror Wasted - non-fiction about the life of an eating disordered woman - very inciteful
I just got finished reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. One of the best things I've ever read. Highly recommended.
Depends what you are into: The Stand-Stephen King: Long book but one of his best and it can consume a good portion of your downtime during the summer. Its about the apocalypse but I found it more intriguing than most books/movies with the same theme. Any book by Chuck palhinuk . Twisted imagery and imaginative perverted stories for the most part Rant is what I read last summer. A bit hard to follow at times but captivating nonetheless. Supernatural-Graham hancock: Following along the lines of some of Terrence Mckennas work and ideas Hancock is an anthropologist who seems to me never intended to set out and have entheogens be a large focus of his work. The book describes some of his various interaction with various cultures and posits many interesting ideas and theories about the origin of many human traditions. I personally feel he is more of a true investigator of old psychedelic influenced cultures and has less of an agenda then others like Daniel pinchback. This will take a good portion of your summer to read as well. Lastly since I mentioned him, food of the gods-terrence mckenna- this book explores the history of psychedelic use past, present and future and posits many interesting theories some far fetched, some quite possible but it is very interesting views and stuff to read.
