Schizophrenia is one mental illness. You have manic depression which can often contain psychotic symptoms, then there is psychotic depression. Or just plain old psychosis, or steroid induced psychosis. So, it doesn't really look like it's just a 'blanket term'. It takes months to diagnose and there are many other illnesses they could decide upon. Maybe have a read, and you will see that the symptoms in schizophrenia are different to other, albeit similar, illnesses.
Dollyfizz and tipsygypsy are right. Schizophrenia is not a blanket term. One has to show specificic symptoms that are exhibited for a certain amount of time before one is labelled schizophrenic. There are varying degrees in the Illness and different types. Three main types are paranoid, catatonic, and disorganized. Paranoid are those who show positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions (the kind showed in Hollywood), catatonic are people who don't really move or are extremely rigid in their movements, and disorganized are those who don't form coherent sentences or often show negative symptoms like lack of emotion and empathy. There are other types and in some extreme cases mixture of types.
whenever i read these posts it always seems different...if by out of touch of reality you mean im using a made up world instead of the physical world, you are right in that i make shit up. but reality and imagination are to highly linked terms in my book. repeated thoughts and echoes and shit isnt a sign that something is wrong ( like some nimnob from the "real world" claims it to be) its a sign that something WENT WRONG...get a life theyre may be schizophrenia but your views on it are probably way off. i get "schizophrenic" from people replying to my threads. but ive learned to love it....demented as i am.
You are way off base on this one but you can maintain whatever views you want.Like I listed, there are different groups and catatonic schizophrenics don't even really move sometimes. Disorganized schizophrenics have scattered thoughts, so the idea of imagination and reality being linked is meaningless because they can't even form coherent sentences and thoughts. The only type of schizophrenia that what you are talking about is relatable is paranoid schizophrenia. There is obviously a seriously dysfunctional symptoms that beyond making shit up to other people. You should really try to read and understand the disorder before you start making these completely false assumptions about the disorder. The way I am reading you is you are making it sound like some sort of desired state. Like how synesthesia can be, but as opposed to mixing senses they are mixing imagination and consesus reality and enjoy it. Schizophrenia is not a desired state to be, especially in a western culture, and many schizophrenics realize their errors in thoughts well after the case, which makes it troubling to them. Like paranoid schizos for example can't comprehend that they are having delusional beliefs or hallucinations till well after the incident. So your example of i get 'schizophrenic' reading your posts just shows how you do not understand the symptoms of this disorder whatsoever.
I don't understand why people voice opinions so strongly without first studying the subject which they are making claims in. Schizophrenia is a definite illness caused by definite physical abnormalities. Mental disorders are biological disorders. Schizophrenia is as real as hepatitis. Here's an idea. Study first, then make claims later And as for this post: "Balance and imbalance = human made = unreal = false = schizophrenia" The conclusions simply do not follow from the premise.
Schizophrenia was made up, not discovered....conditions exist just like open wounds do.schizophrenia exists the same way a delusion exists... hear this: if schizophrenia is a mental condition how does it become "types" as if there is a gene that can be discovered, and used to predict what exactly I am thinking. to me, you just read something in a book ((that someone made up(true or not)) and assume everything is how it seems...nothing is how it seems because noone is right, period. I'm not as ignorant as to believe that i can use knowledge based entirely on logic to percieve others...i feel as if im outsmarting a made up person, not someone in particular...its just some people seem to fit the discription that I am creating about this "mystery persson". and that person is whoever believes that schizophrenia is what they say it is...schizophrenia is a story used to teach people how to use their own perception to percieve anothers "real" perception (true or false doesnt make it a delusion, it is still real).
It's not fully understood, but what's for certain is there is an overproduction of dopamine in the brain that becomes disorganized . This disorganization effects different brain areas and probably effects other neurotransmitters slightly causing the different effects of schizophrenia. There are severe cases of schizophrenia where multiple types are exhibited in the same individual. If you are unwilling to learn anything about it you should at least turn to hollywood and see "A Beautiful Mind" or "The Soloist" to gain a better perspective.
It is also certain that a schizophrenic brain is organized differently than the average brain. The differences are so profound in many cases that you can discern the difference visually with very little training. It seems to me that the people claiming that schizophrenia does not exist are simply too lazy to rigorously investigate the subject. People have made some really silly claims in this thread revealing a complete lack of understanding of the methods of psychology and the process of diagnosis. Which brings me back to the point I have been raising all along: Why make claims about something if you obviously do not know what you are talking about. To anyone denying the existence of schizophrenia: Explain why it is that people diagnosed with schizophrenia all have the same types of deviations from average brain arrangement, including reduction in cortical matter, disorganized connection between the cortical areas and the limbic system, and faulty dopamine regulation systems. Also explain why schizophrenic like symptoms can be induced in normal individuals by administering dopamine, and explain why these symptoms can be reduced by blocking dopamine.
Oh Emanresu, you don't really know those things about dopamine, it's just stuff somebody told you or you read in a book. Somebody just made all that stuff up so they could make money, and you fell for it. The reality is that schizophrenia doesn't exist at all, it's a made-up word. I could just say, "Oh, you're kaleidocranial, you need to take these pills." And if I say it loudly and often enough, I can hypnotize you into believing me and then form my own branch of psychology and eventually rule the world. In fact, maybe I will. Really Emanresu, you just think way too much of your intellect. How do you know you know anything? How do you even know you exist? How do you know I didn't make you up for my own entertainment? Do you really believe that anything you see is real? Get with the program here, Emanresu. You are just a smidgen on the iota of the universe. The reality is that reality is whatever I say it is, and I say you are wrong, and that's all there is to it. I don't need to "study" to know what reality is. I can just be, for I am a microcosm of the universe, and therefore the universe is fully known to me just by my being. You on the other hand are clearly a perverted byproduct of cultural indoctrination, and you have not yet learned to just be. Give it all up, Emanresu. Just flow with the moment and know that I am God...er, I mean, I am correct. And you aren't.
Well yes, it is. I see you employing the broken record technique in this thread, but I think you might as well be trying to explain schizophrenia to a schizophrenic...or hmmm maybe that IS what you're doing... But it's probably good to try to clarify the issues, for those who are able to grasp them...still, for some people you would have to start by explaining the entire scientific method, which they didn't even get when they heard it in school. But carry on, Emanresu, fight the good fight.
I read something recently about schizophrenia that freaked me out: http://www.holistichealthtopics.com/HMG/Bvitamin.html about how different people are able to absorb B-vitamins differently; check out this quote from the link:
The whole link is really interesting. One thing I'd really check out is using sublingual B-12 rather than pills. Or nasal B-12. So it doesn't have to through the gastrointestinal system but rather get absorbed some other way.
You know nothing about this devastating mental illness. Go away. I have a friend with paranoid schizophrenia and you're talking out your ass.
I have paranoid schizophrenia. Uh...when you are completely irrational and hear tormenting voices, it's not just nothing. Oddly, though, it has helped me, and I have learned to silence the voices. All I have to do is accept that I am a nobody. So I don't get it... And is it possible that other schizophrenics just don't know what to do? And can't admit to themselves that they're no good...so they constantly hear these voices saying they're not? I mean, admitting to yourself that you aren't doesn't make you any less good, really...it might make you better. But anyway, I find that that works... ???
Neon, this is very interesting to me - so you're saying your voices are the kind that tell you you're no good, but basically if you agree with them they shut up?
Schizophrenia doesn't exist in indigenous tribes, it's a product of industrialized culture. And schizophrenia is not a specific malfunction of the physical brain in some way. Schizophrenia is rather just a catch-all term for forms of mental behavior that we don't understand.
I've been trying to research this. One work I found is a book called Schizophrenia, Culture, and Subjectivity. So far I haven't found anything that agrees with your statement - one review quoted a contributor named Jenkins as saying, "the course of illness is inherently social and cultural, and a matter of intersubjective engagement." I haven't found anything so far that says schizophrenia doesn't exist in indigenous tribes, but I haven't looked very far yet... From my reading I would agree with this - however I still think the term "malfunction" could be broadly used. It's a malfunction to the extent that people who suffer from one of these forms of mental behavior are unable to function and operate for their own well-being with the context of the culture they live in.
