Today in the shower as I'm lathering up with my nag champa soap and looking at my bottle(s) of shampoo and conditioner if there is available something more organic and good for hair out there. Honestly, I'm starting to dislike tremendously every time I go to squirt out some shampoo or conditioner into my hair that reoccuring thought that I'm plastering chemicals onto my head and into my scalp. Ugh.. So, I'll pose the question to all of you guys. What kind of shampoo do you use? Do you opt for a more 'natural' or organic shampoo and conditioner or do you by more commercial stuff? xx P.s. - Sorry if this is in the wrong forums. Please move if it needs to go elsewhere! Edit: adding P.s.
I've Got Dreads, So I Can't Use Any Regular Shampoo, And Certainly Can't Use A Conditioner, So For Ten Months I Have Been Washing With Baking Soda *bi-carb soda* And I Love It, Leaves The Hair Soft, Clean, And Leaves No, Or Next To No Residue To Polute The Dreads.... Only Drawback Is It Has Zero Smell, And As You Would Know, If People Can't Smell A Nice Scent, They Change To Another Brand. Baking Soda Has No Smell, And The Hair Just Smells Like Fresh, Clean Hair.... Cheers Glen.
You know, for all the uses of baking soda, I didn't even think of this. What an awesome suggestion. Just two questions though: When you say there's no residue, do you mean from the baking soda itself or do you mean that it helps with built up 'stuff' on your hair? And, how do you actually apply it? Rub in powder to wet hair or do you dilute it into water then put on hair? Or something entirely different? Thanks for your input! xx
To Apply It I Have A 1.25 Litre Coke Bottle With A 4mm Hole Drilled In The Cap. I Remove The Cap And Insert A Small Funnel Through Which I Tip About Half A Table Spoon Of Powder, Fill To Three Quarters With Warm Water And Place Finger Over Hole And Shake Gently, Releasing Finger Every So Often To Release The Pressure From The Gasses The Soda Releases. Then In The Shower I Lightly Wet The Hair, Then Invert The Bottle And Squeeze The Mixture Through Each Dread. I Leave It In Till I Have Finished Washing, Shaving Etc, Then I Rinse, Rinse, And Then Rinse Some More. It Is Important To Have A Low Or Zero Product For Dreads Otherwise The Residue Gets Into The Dread And Eventually The Buildup May Cause The Dreads To Smell. Cheers Glen.
Head and Shoulders. Only Head and Shoulders, when I have the option. It makes my hair the perfect texture. Though, it makes my head itchy if my mum buys the dry scalp kind.
My daughter uses Pantene. My son uses Fruiticus. I use at this point, baby shampoo as my hair is still growing in.
I also have to use a non-residue on my hair for the process of dreading. Non-residue means it doesn't add build up. Apple cider vinegar is an other option, or vegetable soaps like Dr. Bronners (not the only brand out there though, one of my favorites is South of France; I really like the pomegranate acacia bar.) You can find these at health food stores, or believe it or not vitamin stores. Baking soda is good too, as Glen mentioned. You mix it with hot water and pour it on your scalp and massage it in, leave it for a while then rinse. As far conditioning theres a lot of homemade remedies you can look into, such as mayonnaise and even beer! Or you could just buy some natural/organic conditioner, which doesn't have silicone unlike most commercial stuff. The options for natural hair care are endless!
Awesome suggestions. Thanks all. I currently use Garnier Fructis, though, I think the reason why is mostly because I like the smell. I'm just not appreciative of how it leaves my hair though and the ingredient list makes me cringe... I will definitely try out some of these suggestions. ooh! I love peppermint! :>
It smells great, but I won't touch the stuff anymore. It made my hair feel so thin -- especially, the one for thin hair. It made me feel like I was going to go bald tomorrow. Then one time, Pert was on sale and money was tight, so my mum got that, and my hair felt so thick and nice, but sorta dry. But Head and Shoulders makes my hair almost perfect feeling, and I loveee the minty smell.
I used to be a suave vanilla kind of guy, but as I've budded into a young man, I prefer their coconut.
