modes are easy, just have to learn like 5 boxes and shift them depending on the key and whether its major or minor, for example. He is a wicked player though, must admit
Actually it is 7. Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian. Although I've scene Billy Sheehan break it down to combinations of 3 leaft hand fingering patterns crossing strings. Peace OUt, Rev J
I've never heard that phonetic device before. I was just looking to see if I could find that Billy Sheehan thing. It was from an instructional video he did in the late 80's. I've got it on VHS. The funny thing is that it is hosted by Wolf Marshall and Sheehan explains the techniques then Marshall explains the theory behind it. Peace Out, Rev J
you didn't get me. I Don't Play Loud Marshalls Any Longer: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian
Actually I got that. A phonetic device is like a sentance that helps you remember something else. Actually Jim Marshall was the founder of Marshall amps. Wolf Marshall is/was a guy who did a shit load of transcriptions/columns for Guitar For the Practicing Musician (now Guitar One as a matter of fact I think he may still be on staff there) and the occasional thing for Guitar World. He has buttloads of instructional material out. One of my favorite ways to practice modes is with a Boss RC20 loop station pedal. I'll start out with a one or two chord vamp and practice the mode over that. For example say I want to practice my Dorian Mode I'll make a loop of myself playing a CMaj/D to a Dmin7 while that loop is playing I'll play a Dorian Mode over it so I can hear it in context. I use the same technique with a set of Steve DiGiorgio right hand exorcises I found on line to break up the monotony a little bit. Peace Out, Rev J
Actually, if you count ALL the possible modes in the 12 tone tempered scale (our scale), there are approximatively 6000 possible modes, or 6000 possible ways of getting across the octave. The music of the futur is almost INFINITE!!! Peace
I'll have to check out Slonimsky sometime. Indian music has more, once you figure in all the microtones. Peace Out, Rev J
I think I know the pedal your talking about and I think I was thinking of doing the same approach in practicing.
The 2 pedal one is the one I've got. I found it to be the most intuitive. I really recomend it. I generally put it at the end of the signal chain right before my amp. If I were running a 2 channel amp I'd run it in the effect loop. Peace Out, Rev J
Actually this is from another Billy Sheehan instructional video. It wasn't the one I was looking for but it gets the point across: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngRicIFHzAI&feature=related"]YouTube- Billy Sheehan - Bass Secrets Interview - part 1 Peace Out, Rev J
