    OMG!
I've seen snakes, possums, and of course the cats...but this rather big (bigger than the biggest cat) racoon on the back porch, sniffing at the cat food, and slowly (might I add) ambling away just flipped me out!

Have we humans messed with their natural habitat that much? oh wait, duh...but still. Aren't they vegetarians? Will they kill the cats?

Any advice, thoughts, etc.? I mean wth?!

that sucker must really get around, because I had one that fit that exact description wander into the back yard last night! lol

I ran him off by making some loud noise and speaking loudly at him to go on his way - I will let you know if he comes back, but as much as I love animals I dont really want to sign up for raccoon keeper!

Racoons are weird. Last year, I saw one climbing a chain-link fence with a Wendy's bag in its mouth.

We have one the size of a 6mo old lab pup. AND MEAN!!
We have tried everything to keep it out of the front yard and off the porch. Its very forward and has headed to attack us before. We just hop in the house and wait for it to leave. It has babies, so not gonna shoot it. Animal control is useless out here. So, were stuck with this mutant raccoon.
    I feel your pain, Lynnbrown.

The problem with 'coons is they are so cute, you forget how smart they are and how vicious they can be...and that they are potential rabies carriers!

If you can't bring yourself to shoot them my advice is to catch them in live-traps and personally deliver them to animal control...and give animal control the finger for not helping!

Stayed at my son's after a hospital procedure and they have a family of Nutria living next door--mom and 4 babies. It's like a wildlife sanctuary next door--overgrown and there are raccoons also. The raccoons will run ,but the Nutria are coming into their yard to eat clover and they'll take a run at us if approached. They're like huge rats and are rodents. Ugly things with pig noses and aggressive. I'm thinking of getting a squirt gun, filling it with jalapeno juice to see if that will convince them not to come over.

Yeah I read those Nutria are not native to oregon. Some fucks set up fur farms back in the 1930's. when the profits dried up, a lot of defunct farms just released them into the wild.

I thought Oregon had a bounty on them the population is so huge.... 1$ per tail... Not much incentive for trappers.

Shit, I hear the meat is delicious, (nutria are strict vegetarians!) :D

Hahahaha--yeah,I heard that story too. Rodent fur? Someone was smokin' something back then. Reminds me of living on the big Island of Hawaii. Some people thought it would be a good idea to bring in mongoose to kill the rats.OOOOPPPS---mongoose are diurnal--rats are nocturnal. Now they're over run with both!If my door wasn't kept closed, the mongoose/s would come right in and get in the garbage.

Geez, thanks everybody for the feedback...I've been checking all night (well since 9:30) and so far, so racoon.
Dear God, that was just awful...but I think I would just flip out if I saw Nutria. I heard a friend from Oregon speak of seeing them in Fla.

Hey bubbler! :) I did have the experience of seeing and TRYING to run off some (2) possum on the back porch. Not only were they not all that big (at that time), but they were already very aggressive, hissing at me and just slowly waddling over to try and find cover. I'm screaming, with a broom, and he's like what 1/10th my size - and totally only "bothered" with me; but whatever...eventually I saw them run over in the road...which I didn't do, but honestly was not sorry about either.:p

    I'm in Anderson.

o319, you are an ass. But funny sometimes.

Squirrels are responsible for the destruction of a NUMBER of trees at Clemson University.
    That's just fyi.

    Oh Hell No!

I just saw that BIG butted black-eyed racoon!

I even had to open the door (a crack) and YELL to make him barely move off the porch, where he went to the door and looked in through the door which is always cracked open for the CATS.

Lord have mercy. This is just awful.

None of my cats are little, and all but one are inside (orison) - but I think that great big thang with those terrible claws could kill even the largest cat I've ever seen
