Why do bands do this?

So many albums I listen to have a 10min+ track at the end. Being a lover of long songs, I hope its going to be a good one. I listen only to discover that it is a regular length song which then fades to silence only to have some nonsense minutes later. It feels like a con. Where is the epic masterpiece to finish off the album? Do they add extra minutes of silence just to prompt people into buying?

They're trying to give the listener a sense of spontaneity on the band's behalf, only it lacks all feeling of it and integrity.

Well secret tracks worked when people had older CD players, without the time stamp and stuff. People would be listening to the CD and it would end, they wouldn't turn it off (figuring their cd player would automatically) and this song would randomly play after silence. I used to love finding them when I still bought them :p

What about "the gaping lotus experience" at the end of "opiate" by tool that's a good one and neither an epic or a waste of time. The clash 'train in vain' is another good one but I guess that's actually a separate song.

This is speculation but I'm sure some of it is just for effect but possibly the record companies contract the artist so the album has to be a certain length and from what I've heard artists usually tend to have more control over the second half of the album. So it may literally be filler. Alot of that is speculation like I said.

Its kind of irrelevant in the end, there are sooooo few albums where every song is a gem and hence you listen to the whole album enough to worry about the last track

Plus I havent paid for an album in like 7 years
