I'm just starting to look into growing, and reading various guides. I found this one on shroomery: http://www.shroomery.org/8439/The-Quart-Jar-Way-Revisited

Does that look like a good method to follow? The PF tek guide on shroomery seems excessively complicated. This seems to have the advantage of not needing to build a chamber.

Alternatively, what would you guys recommend as the best guide for a beginner to follow?

    Edit:
This guide also looks good: http://www.rollitup.org/hallucinatory-substances/165893-mushroom-growing-walkthrough-pf-tek.html

And here's the really complicated looking shroomery PF Tek guide:http://www.shroomery.org/8409/PF-Tek

Also, how necessary is a pressure cooker as opposed to just using a pot of boiling water?

On "The quart jar way" in step 2 it says to load uncooked rice in the jars with water, then on step 3 it says to break apart the rice clumps after pressure cooking. I have tried to break apart rice that's been cooked in the jars before, it's next to impossible. Rather precooking the rice and loading it into the jars very loosely allows for it to break apart, but barely. Also in step 3 it recommends opening the lids and inoculating without a glove box, this is a very sketchy practice, some have luck with it, some don't, especially this time of year in the northern hemisphere the spore load in the air is much higher than in colder months. You may want to look into using silicone injection sites, with flame sterilizing your needle between inoculations, that will be a much safer method of inoculating without a glovebox.
    2nd link doesn't work.
And don't let the PF tek intimidate you, it really isn't very complicated. It's just worded to be easy to understand even for complete idiots. It really is a good guide and it's where many of us have had our first success in this hobby.
A pressure cooker beats a pot of boiling water with a baseball bat, really they are the only reliable way to go, I have 2 of them personally. There not just useful for mushroom growing either, 1 hour at 15 PSI pinto beans go from raw/dried to done, none of that overnight soaking and simmering all day stuff when you got a pressure cooker.

2nd link fixed. it seems like a clearer version of the tek than the one on shroomery I posted, but it would be much appreciated if someone experienced checked it over for me.

Actually scratch that, I found this one which seems really clear and straightforward:
    http://www.shroomery.org/8410/Simple-Cubensis-Growing-Technique

only thing is, after listing out and costing all the necessary parts, it comes out to about $200-250, with the most expensive parts being the pressure cooker (80 for a large enough one) and aquarium tank for the fruiting chamber, along with a tank heater for the incubation chamber.

How necessary is it to heat the incubation chamber?

actually I just realized I don't know where I'm gonna be able to do this. I'm living in a 4 bedroom house with 3 other guys. the only nonbedroom areas are the kitchen, dining/living room, and a random extra room that's pretty much part of the living room.

I guess I could sterilize the shit out of the kitchen for the parts of it that require it, then keep everything in a sealed box in the one extra closet after sterilizing it and making sure no one else uses that closet, then keep it in a discreet corner on like a table or something during fruiting, also in a sealed chamber.

Yeah, def going for it. I'm most likely gonna order 4 different strains to see how it goes, in case one doesn't want to work Right now I'm thinking B+, Golden Teacher, Treasure coast, and Penis Envy albino. Most likely 6 jars of each and save the extra spores in case anything goes wrong. I know that penis envy is supposed to be difficult, but I want to try it to see what happens.

Question about the FC: I'll be using a shotgun FC setup with perlite. Would it be better to have one big FC, or 2-4 smaller ones? My assumption right now is that it'll be harder to keep a bigger chamber humid enough, although I do live in Florida so it may not be that much of an issue.
