This girl did a bunch of my dreads yesterday, and some of them turned out strange. I guess when she was twisting and ripping, she held onto the same two sections when turning it. There was also some backcombing which created knots to hold the dread together, but it mostly looks like a spiral braid of some sort.

My question is if this has happened with anyone else and how I can turn the 2-section spiral into 1 knotted mess. I'm guessing more backcombing tomorrow is in order. Or maybe I'm just thinking about it too much and leaving it alone will let it eventually tangle together?

    thanks!

    updated!

i already plan on getting someone to backcomb them a lot more in the following few days, but they're stayed together pretty damn well so far. i slept without bands

some of the "spiral" dreads.. you can almost pinch the middle section so that the 2 sections separate and you can touch fingers (if that makes any sense)

    did she root flip any?
like put the tip of the dread back through itself?

ohhh no she didn't. in fact, it was her first time doing any dreads. i'll try that with one of them right now..

edit: it somewhat worked! well i only put it through once and i can still seperate both sections slightly.. how many times should i do it? and any other tips while im at it?

    not suggesting you do
I did it with a couple of mine.. and it gave them a slight "spiral" look.

If I look at the dreads I can still see where I root flipped

I just want to figure out how I can "combine" the dread into itself so it doesn't feel like 2 seperate dreads held together by a few knotted sections.

No. don't root flip. that's bad.

and it shouldn't require re-backcombing. you should be set for now :)

Alright well I only root-flipped ONCE with one dread but I'm guessing that's not too bad. Anyway...

Are you saying I shouldn't bother backcombing the very smooth tips and sections?

I figured if the dreads were 2 separate sections spiraled around each other, they would have no way of tangling into each other..

here's a perfect picture depicting my problem.. me SLIGHTLY pulling apart one of the spiral dreads:

by the way the rubber band isn't holding it together; even without the band i would not be able to easily tear the dread apart

If she was twisting and ripping..> I have no idea how she managed that, other than she didn't bother finishign the dread and just stuck an elastic on it to "finish" it.

i stuck the elastics on today, just to keep them all together for when we do the maintenance tomorrow. i feel like the hardest part is over, which was just sectioning everything and making at least enough knots to hold them together even WITHOUT bands.

she kind of just experimenting on her own after i showed her how I twist and rip. i'm also feeling more comfortable after a lot more google searching.. seems like the general idea is to just let them be, wether they split or not. at least ill still have a bunch of solid ones either way :D

uh maybe she didn't quite rip after twisting... its supposed to form basic knots... and that just looks like a twist which is not knotted at all... this could just be me though :)

any solution if that's the case? remember, she also did some backcombing on each one

just leave it dude.. as the roots grow it will all come together, I had the same issue with a couple of mine.

    you're fussing to much imo

I still have a couple dreads that are "split" in that way even after a year. sometimes that just happens. i would put a bead on the parts that are split. i did that for one that was legit starting to come apart into two and it seems to be working

i'd give it some time. hair will knot up eventually :) probably best to stop messing with it. that will just end up damaging your hair.

I really am dude.. in fact I separated a bunch of them last night which were just really thick and looked like 2 small dreads forced into one.. that's how bad the roots looked. They sort of looked like braids by the way she twisted them (less ripping I guess), and even though I know braids can turn into dreads eventually I read that they would be bumpy and uneven so I just pulled them apart.

Now I have a bunch of loose hair, and sections that are also loose and small.

A little frustrating since they all looked way better a few days ago. As long as my hair is all knotted, that should be enough of a jump-start I guess..
