Anyone can say they are open minded, but it is kind of an empty statement because it is such an obvious thing to say. It is such an expected thing to hear when meeting someone new that it has almost has no meaning. It is akin to saying "I like long walks on the beach" in regards to originality. How thoughtful.

In fact, many people who say they are open minded are actually very intolerant people, I have found.

I hope it is a trend that eventually fizzles out.

How do you feel about the phrase "open minded?"

Focus: What other phrases are overused?

I feel the same way about open-minded as I do about:

    'adding insult to injury'

    'cautiously optimistic'

    'new lease on life'

    'the bottom line'

    'peace of mind'

    'absolutely'

    'you bet'

'light at the end of the tunnel'

    'closure'

Some of those have been the rage for the past 25 years. It's silly.

In my experience I find ironically the times I tell people 'I am open minded' are often the times I am least, and have my mind set on something. It's just a way of being polite. Point being, I agree with the OP statement, claiming intolerance to a partial degree.

''shall we go to the pub or for a walk?''

    ''i'm indifferent, open minded''

    Like hell

Ive noticed this more when talking with females but maybe it's just because I try to strike up more pertinent, rounded conversation with them and actually listen. I've only noticed it with guys when discussing music and it seems to be the blanket statement for people who are unsure how to answer.

the one that comes to mind immeadiately this one girl telling me "Im mature" on the first date and she was like the least mature girl I've dated or person I've met in the past few years. Unless I was farting at the dinner table and sticking noodles up my nose (which I assure you i wasnt), it seems like you show maturity not say that you are.

When you first meet people they probably use alot of these cliche phrases to try and give you a sense of being normal and alot are safe blanket statements.

The phrase "I love you" is seriously distorted at times, as is the phrase, "I am".

See, that's the one for me

    'I love you'

I don't discount many younger people who may love someone truly, but in most cases people just have no idea what love is. Young love is very sweet, though.

"stop judging me" is pretty annoying. I'll make whatever decisions about you that I please. Just like I "judge" when it is safe to cross the street.

And "haters" when people are trying to tell you that you're flushing your life down the toilet. I'm not going to enable you.

'I'm just me' pisses me off. No, you're probably not that unique, you are like everybody else.

I do not think that anyone is truly open minded as the moment you qualify anything with a personal statement you have stopped being open minded. You may be receptive and accepting but that is not open minded.

    It is a claptrap phrase.

People have different definitions of being "open-minded" and it also has to do with the particular subject at hand. A person can be open-minded, in one regard, while being extremely closed-minded in another. It's very subjective and case-sensitive.

I also believe people don't need to say that they are open-minded. If they are truly open-minded about certain things, then it will show. Many people claim to be open-minded just to dodge people's observations and perceptions of their closed-minded nature.
